June 2010 - Mambo by the Bay

Mambo by the Bay - June 18 - 20
By Venessa Santos-Garza

Flips, tricks, and amazing showmanship are just some of the many things Corpus Christi can expect from Mambo by the Bay.
Mambo by the Bay is the first ever salsa event held in Corpus Christi. The three day celebration of music and dance, hosted June 18- 20 at the Omni Bayfront Hotel, will feature performers from around the country.
There will be two shows—Friday and Saturday evening—and two days of workshops.
“This showcase is an awesome compilation of routines from world famous dance companies,” said Kenny Del Torro, show director and salsa dance instructor from McAllen. “It’s a weekend full of Latin dancing, workshops and fun!”
Del Torro teamed up with local dance company and non-profit Third Coast Salseros to bring in feature performers from as far away as Boston, New York, Chicago and San Diego. Teams from throughout the State, including Corpus Christi, will also join in to complete the show.
Full weekend passes are available and allow people to participate in all the weekend events. For those interested in show and evening dance night passes are also available.
One of the greatest things, said Del Torro, is that people won’t see the same show on Saturday that they saw on Friday. He encouraged people to try and make it out both nights.
For Lisa Vargas, who dances with Semeneya Dance Company out of San Antonio and Pasiones Unidas of Austin, the trip to Corpus Christi is very personal. The 27-year-old graduated from W.B. Ray High School in 2000. She began dancing and training in San Antonio shortly after and now serves as one of the team’s artistic directors.
Mambo by the Bay will be the first time she performs on a Corpus Christi stage. Vargas , who spends a great deal of time traveling the country to perform with her San Antonio based dance group, is anxious for her family to be able to attend a show.
“It means the world to me to be coming back to my hometown to perform for such a big event,” said Vargas. “I’m excited, happy and nervous all at the same time.”
