December 2010 - LED Lighting Project

City, DMD use LED Technology
to Light Shoreline Sculpture
By Ericha Kemm

A work from Corpus Christi’s Public Art Collection installed in 2002 received special LED lighting as a pilot program for illuminating the Harbor Bridge.  The work was completed recently on the sculpture entitled Orion’s Belt, located at 1068 Shoreline Boulevard to test the feasibility of LED technology for illuminating large public works.  Financed with 2004 bond funds earmarked for lighting downtown, the project utilizes 12 “color shifting” can lights at the base of the sculpture. The color theme relates well to the wind-seeking sculptures, placed in the pattern of the primary stars in the Orion Constellation, but can be adjusted to any theme.   The project was made possible through the efforts of the DMD, City of Corpus Christi, and Naismith Engineering who provided work free of charge.

John Vidaurri, Executive Director of the DMD, describes the project: “The Downtown Management District was recently afforded an opportunity to partner with the City of Corpus Christi to install an LED lighting system on the Orion’s Belt sculptures.  Our DMD Board of Directors supported the partnership effort and our role in the partnership was to assist the City’s efforts to manage the project through to its fruition.  DMD believes that in addition to enhancing the aesthetics of the Corpus Christi skyline, the project is an outstanding effort to continue the use of green technology Downtown.  The new LED lighting system will be much more energy efficient than standard lighting and will significantly reduce the cost of electric service to power the lighting.  The lit system produces an array of colors that DMD feels will add some very attractive seasonal lighting to our Downtown skyline.”

Terry K Orf, Architect at Naismith Engineering, states that the LED lighting on Orion’s Belt will provide 11 years or roughly 50,000 hours of illumination before burning out, a vast improvement over older lighting fixtures which often can not stand up to our South Texas Climate. These programmable lights currently run the “Aurora Borealis” theme using blue, white and purple colors interspersed with quick pulses of red, orange and green.   An evening viewing of the sculpture, which is broken up into three sections, reveals to any viewer the challenges in lighting such slender metal forms.

Winds constantly shift the sculptures, making them a moving target for the LED lights.  Orf explains: “The biggest trick was providing light for a 360 degree area around the sculptures, so we used a special lens that spreads out the light over a wider distance.  Normally the lights reach farther out, but this lens shortens and widens the beam to accommodate our needs.”  Another challenge was getting electricity to that particular section of greenbelt on Shoreline Boulevard, which did not exist previously.  The Corpus Christi Gas company assisted by digging under the street for power.

It’s no small wonder that Orion’s Belt was chosen as a pilot program for lighting the Harbor Bridge.  With the upcoming bridge project, which has been a popular citizen request since Mayor Joe Adame has entered office, slender metal forms will require illumination, and although the bridge does not move, there promises to be many challenges in store.

The Orion’s Belt pilot LED project is another in a series to redevelop downtown.  Says Vidaurri, “The ongoing development and re-development of Downtown Corpus Christi is all about partnerships, whether they are public or private or a combination of both matters not.  Partnerships provide the impetus for successful Downtown redevelopment efforts in communities throughout our county, and local partnerships are providing that same impetus in Corpus as well.”

Description of Orion’s Belt from the
Corpus Christi Public Art Collection Publication,

Lynda Jones, Author
The Sculptures are placed in the pattern of the primary stars Ainitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka in the Orion Constellation at 1068 Shoreline.  Fourteen stainless steel pavers, identifying the secondary stars of the Constellation, are placed throughout the downtown area.  They are located as follows: Saiph is at the north end of People’s street T-head in the grass.  Rigel is on the jetty directly across from Orion’s Belt, Pi 2 is in the center of the Water Garden.  Omicron is on Mesquite and Brewster Streets near the Asian Culture Museum.  Bellatrix is at N. Mesquite and Fitzgerald Streets across for the Seamen’s Center.  Betelgeuse is located at W. Broadway and Waco Streets at the Old Bayview Cemetery.  Meissa is at Rescaca and Tancahua Streets.  Xi 1 is at the intersection of Lobo Lane, Chico Street and N. Staples Street.  Upsilon is at Staples and Ramirez Streets.  Chi 1 is located at Ramirez and N. Alameda Streets near Northside Manor Apartments and Chi2 is at Chipito and N. Alameda Streets.

December 2010 - Focus on New Business Downtown

Focus on new business Downtown
 By DMD Staff

For downtowns that are undergoing redevelopment and revitalization, new business growth is always a major focus, yet one of the most difficult to achieve.  However, Downtown Corpus Christi is fortunate to have a sustained a core of business activity from which to start.  It is this Downtown core that has served as an anchor for the attraction of new Downtown small business growth.

A cursory look at sales tax revenues and the number of new small business start-ups in neighborhoods outside of Downtown reveal that inner-city growth is outpacing other City growth in spite of the current economic climate.

“A review of sales tax revenues reveals that in spite of the recession and current economic doldrums, Downtown is one of the few Corpus Christi neighborhoods to show an increase in sales tax revenues which can be attributed in part to new business growth in our Downtown community as well as the stability of our core Downtown businesses”, said David Loeb, Chairman of the Board of the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District.  “Thanks in part to a huge amount of support from the City and the partnerships that have evolved within the past few years, we are seeing an increase in entrepreneurial and small business development the likes of which we have not seen in recent memory,” said Loeb.

Over a dozen new small businesses have established locations in Downtown Corpus in the past year, and the brief sampling here of four of those new businesses provides an excellent insight into not only the types of businesses that decided to locate Downtown but also an idea of what the new businesses hope to accomplish in their new Downtown locations.

December 2010 - Allgood Fitness

Allgood Fitness Downtown
By Kaitlin Steinberg

Dusty Oliveira aka DJ Dus is known about town for his musical talents, but he’s about to add another title to
his resume: fitness guru. OK, so he probably won’t start wearing neon sweatbands and spandex, but as one
of the owners and creators of AllGood Fitness, he’s about to start mixing up his act.

AllGood Fitness is set to open in late December in the Nueces Lofts building Downtown. Olivera is the
mastermind behind the concept for the new gym, but this is hardly his first turn as an entrepreneur. Along with
a few partners, Olivera also helped create Produce, a recording studio/boutique/gallery space known for its
innovative design work. Now that Produce has become a success, obviously the next step for Olivera is
to…open a gym?
“Why not?” he says. “There is a demand for fitness now in Corpus. You look at Austin and you see people
running and riding bikes everywhere. Trends always go south, so naturally we were the next to hit the fitness
wave.”
AllGood Fitness will cater to the young, urban professional, as well as the other diverse populations moving to
the Downtown area. The gym will have amenities like a dry sauna, towel service, personal training and of
course, a shower, for those who want to get in a quick work out before their 9-to-5 or during their lunch
break.
Classes will start once the gym’s juicebar opens early next year, but in the meantime, Olivera hopes to do
some specialized urban group training classes “to take advantage of the bayfront and our little concrete
jungle.”
AllGood Fitness will offer monthly memberships with specials for students and families, as well as corporate
wellness packages. The gym will also issue day passes during business hours, and members will be able to
bring guests if they choose. Members will be able to work out 24 hours a day.
With a little over a month until it opens, AllGood Fitness is starting to come together nicely. Olivera’s aim is to
create a fresh, relaxed atmosphere, which will no doubt be punctuated by elements of design from the team
behind Produce. Olivera also wants great music in his space, and as a DJ, he should be able to provide some
high-energy tunes to sweat to.
“This is not like any other spot in town,” Olivera promises. “You will be able to come here, get in a quick
work out, get fresh, and get back to work.”

Peace of Mind Massage Therapy & Natural Healing
By Jynelle Ornelas

Peace of Mind Massage Therapy & Natural Healing is a New Woman Owned Business based on mother nature‘s common grounds, located at 602 N Lower Broadway where Peoples St meets the wall to Uptown , Opened July 10th 2010.
Peace of Mind will transform all of your aches and pains, internal and external, into comfort by giving you ease and relief with massage therapy and natural healing. LMT: Jynelle Ornelas and LMT: Rosalinda Hernandez have made massage and natural healing their passion. Their education and techniques stemmed from the Austin school of massage therapy and homeopathic remedies passed down from past generations.
We all have stress, tension, aches and pains that we experience and need to give attention to, in order to take care of our bodies, we only get one body. Everyone experiences stress from everyday living, we feel tension laced throughout our muscles sometimes accompanied by aches and pain from old accidents, medical conditions, and repetitive hard work we put our bodies thought daily. No matter what your occupation working too long without a break creates tension in your back, shoulders, and neck muscles, tired eyes , and slower , more easily irritated mental process. Human touch increases the production of endorphins, growth hormone, along with DHEA, all of which lengthen your life span and lower the negative impact of stress. Studies have found that patients who are regularly touched recover faster than those who are not touched. So get a massage and feel your mood improve. We have heard many people complain of being over medicated, tired and stressed. With every massage we give the option of mankind’s first medicine which consists of 100% natural oils combined into your massage cream or oils, and other healing earth products. We invite you to come in anytime or call to schedule a massage to get a kick start in your wellness plan. We offer chair massage, table massage, weight loss wraps and cellulite fighting wraps, wrinkle reducers and skin tighten wraps along with facials. December 2010 - Sushibar Downtown

Hybridspace Concept - Sushibar and Stereo Musicbar
By Kaitlin Steinberg

Warning: What you are about to read will make you salivate. Go ahead and grab some napkins now.

Ninja Noodle. Gold Chain Roll. Kobe Beef Slider. These inventive concoctions are just some of the delicious offerings at the new Sushibar Downtown, part of Hybridspace Concept. The original Sushibar on the Island has been such a huge success that the owners, David Le and his wife Julie, decided to open another branch Downtown.

Hybridspace Concept houses both Sushibar and Stereo Musicbar, providing a venue for hip Corpus Christi folk to eat great food, hear live music and socialize in a swanky, lounge atmosphere. After dining on creative, fusion cuisine at Sushibar, patrons can make their way into Stereo Musicbar to continue the party into the night.

When searching for locations for the new restaurant, Le thought it made perfect sense to house Hybridspace Concept in the same building as Aria, the popular Downtown club. The combination of Stereo Musicbar’s tunes, Sushibar’s chow and Aria’s sophisticated club vibe create what Le calls “an explosive energy,” that is already helping to revitalize local nightlife.

“People don’t expect this type of place in Corpus,” says Le, “yet the people who have created it all are locals. It’s really a Corpus space.”

All of the chefs are local as well, and all of the recipes are created by Le and head chef David Lee. Most of Sushibar’s offerings are small plates that combine traditional Asian ingredients with more familiar recipes, like Harissa-Marinated Lamb Chops and Sushibar Fish Tacos.

Some of the more innovative offerings include the Geisha Roll, which consists of blackened tuna, smoked eel, cream cheese, avocado, soft shell crab and jalapeno, and the Godzilla Roll, a tantalizing combination of fresh tuna, salmon, escalar, yellow tail, hamachi and avocado on top of cream cheese and crab.

Not only is David Le a sushi mastermind, he is also a founder of Produce, a gallery/music studio/boutique that has been making big waves in the Downtown art scene with its alternative exhibits. The gang behind Produce creates hip and catchy promotional videos and ad campaigns for the Sushibar brand, which can be found on the restaurant’s website. Le and his wife are also planning to open a Southside branch of Sushibar early next year, which is good news for sushi lovers throughout Corpus.

Sushibar Downtown is open for lunch from 11 AM-1:45 PM Tuesday-Friday and for dinner from 5 PM-10 PM Tuesday-Saturday. Happy Hour is Tuesday-Friday from 5 PM-7 PM.

December 2010 - Tease Salon

Tease Salon
By Jeffrey L. Linthicum

If you want to see what a successful step towards downtown revitalization looks like, take a peek inside Tease Full Service Salon, which opened in October at 429 William Street, between La Bahia Restaurant & Dentoni's Pizza. The 3,000+ square foot facility has been transformed, thanks to the visionary efforts of business partners Kevin Murphy and Sara M. Butcher and the amazing design team at Business Interiors of South Texas.
"We weren't looking to move from our location (formerly Doohicki's) at Gaslight Square," said Owner and Stylist Kevin Murphy, "but when I took one look at the space, I knew we were ready to be back downtown. I love it here." Murphy, a notable local stylist for nearly 25 years, partnered in a salon called Planet Hair that was located in the same space over a decade ago. "It just feels 'right' to be back."
Murphy partnered with Sara Butcher for this venture. Sara, a bubbly beauty with mile-long legs, who is known for her precision cuts and styling, was the burst of fresh, youthful energy that Murphy needed to commit to make the move. "She is a ball of energy with a 'get it done' attitude," says Murphy. That is evident when Butcher gives first-timers the 'Grand Tour'.
"I love coming to work in this beautiful space!" Butcher beams proudly. It's easy to understand why. Dramatic, soaring interiors and soothing colors dominate the open and airy, loft-style space. Mod furnishings, huge tropical plants and intriguing art are dotted throughout the salon, which features space for 8-10 stylists, a Massage Therapist, a Nail Technician and a Facialist. "People are already booking the space for parties!" She boasts. "I guess that means we did something right!"
But Tease Salon is not just another 'pretty face'. The salon also offers a coterie of award-winning services from a team of well-heeled professionals. Alongside Kevin and Sara, you'll find several other recognizable local beauty specialists.
Stylist P.J. Harkins has been been beautifying clients for 36 years, but always keeps her finger on the pulse of the latest trends. P.J. styled hair in Hollywood for many years and has had her hands in the mane's of such screen icons as Meg Tilly, Eric Stoltz and June Lockhart. She has also served as a Guest Artist for international beauty labels like Redkin and Helene Curtis.
Robert Garcia, Stylist and Make-Up Artist, has over 15 years of experience in the beauty business, has worked wtih three Miss USA titleholders and is currently styling MIss Teen Texas USA. During a stint on San Antonio's 'Great Day S.A' morning program, he styled notables including Eva Longoria, Oscar De La Hoya, Matthew McConaughey, Ladybird Johnson and Nellie Connally.
Nail Technician Diana Cruz is a fixture in the Corpus Christi salon scene and has worked as a coveted Nail Technician for 30 years. She closely guards her technique, but it is common knowledge that pedicures and manicures from the specialist are a 'must have' treat.
Stylist Tim Tate has 14 years of hair experience and has worked across Texas in high-end salons like Toni & Guy and Aveda. He also enjoys a second career as a therapist for at-risk youth and will begin training in 2011 as a representative for famous haircare company Farouk.
Tease also features a unique, new service addition - Bleach Bright teeth whitening, offered in-house by Owner/Technician Piper Precious. Piper, former owner of La Femme Boutique, also serves as Kevin's 'right hand' and is also a liscensed Manicurist.
"We are still building our team," says Butcher. "but our great core group from Doohicki's remains. It's important to us to fill the salon with people that really meld well together and contribute to our business and our general atmosphere."
Kevin and Sara invite you to experience their salon and spa services including cutting, coloring, styling, manicures, facials, waxing and Bleach Bright teeth whitening in just 20 minutes. The team there also offers special event hair and make-up application and a full line of hair and beauty products. By appointment Tuesday through Saturday by calling (361)882-2191.

December 2010 - First Friday ArtWalk

First Friday ArtWalk
By Alan S Albin

ArtWalk is a monthly Downtown Corpus Christi event held, on the First Friday of every month from 5:30 to 9pm. It is organized by the Downtown Management District in association with K Space Contemporary and the assistance of several other sponsors.
Although it started as a specific “Art” event the direction it has taken is very much that of a “neighborhood event” involving more than just the art community of Downtown.
Indeed ArtWalk has grown from 5 venues to 56 participating businesses as of the December event. This expansion has prompted the grouping of venues into the following categories thus allowing any Downtown business to take a legitimate role within the First Friday ArtWalk event:

•    Galleries                   The “core” ArtWalk venues
•    Cultural Venues        usually involving art or artists
•    Shops                       many with art on display and for sale
•    Restaurants & Bars   all offering discounts & specials, some with art on display
•    Other                        venues which do not fit the other categories but wish to be
involved in ArtWalk either as art venues or sponsors

ArtWalk is based in La Retama Park, which is the triangular park between Peoples Street and Schatzell Street in the shadow of the Wells Fargo Building, and the fun begins at 5:30pm when a band begins to play and the DTown tram takes off on its’ first tour of the ArtWalk circuit.
WaterStreet Market is another large enclave of ArtWalk venues and there is always a band playing there and art vendors outside the shops. The WaterStreet group of restaurants usually have specials and discounts on offer each ArtWalk evening and, weather permitting, operate their Tiki bar outside in the market square.
The Art Center of Corpus Christi at 100 Shoreline is the third focal point of the ArtWalk where music is provided and vendors are always present in addition to the monthly rotating gallery exhibits. Desiree’s by the Bay restaurant is also open for dinner on ArtWalk nights.
The Center on South Water Street is another central point on the ArtWalk. Whilst it is quite far from the central Downtown hub of the event  it can be easily reached by taking the RTA ArtWalk Express from La Retama Park; once there you will have 30 minutes to visit with the many businesses located in The Center before catching the next “Express” to continue visiting with other ArtWalk locations.

The DTown tram has HOBO on board playing their unique brand of “honkadelic” music and they have become a major attraction on ArtWalk as they sing and play their, sometimes irreverent (but always family friendly) way, around Downtown. Many people simply ride the tram to benefit from this only one of its kind experience.
ArtWalk takes place come rain or shine and in the unlikely event of inclement weather The Art Center of Corpus Christi at 100 Shoreline is our alternate “Hub” where the La Retama Park vendors, band, and prize draw will relocate if necessary.

Maps of Downtown showing the ArtWalk venues, the tram route, and the RTA direct shuttle route are available at the following locations:
•    DMD booth in La Retama Park
•    K Space Contemporary on Starr Street
•    On the DTown tram and the RTA ArtWalk Express
•    The Art Center of Corpus Christi
•    The Center on South Water Street (Tango Tea Room)
•    From First Friday Ambassadors and Volunteers throughout Downtown
(look for the orange polo shirts on Segways and orange T-Shirts on foot.)

In addition to a band in the park there are always a good number of vendors set up there to provide ArtWalkers with a selection of items to view and hopefully buy. We are always looking for new vendors to help make Artwalk more diverse, interesting, and entertaining so if you, or someone you know, would like to join us please contact Michelle Smythe of K Space Contemporary on 361-887-6834 for details of how to participate.
During the winter season we will have a light tower in the Park to supplement the City street lighting after dark. This will also enable us to provide power for the bands and maybe some decorative lighting for the vendors’ booths. If you have any thoughts on how to improve the ArtWalk experience either in the park or around Downtown please contact Alan Albin of the DMD on 361-882-2363.

Although there will always be lots of exciting things going on at the four major locations please do make an effort to tour the other venues which are scattered throughout the Downtown area. Most of these venues can be comfortably reached on foot, it is after all, - ArtWalk. However to reach some of the outlying venues such as The Yachting Center on the People St T-Head, The Center at 505 S Water Street, and even the Art Center at 100 Shoreline, you may wish to take advantage of the DTown tram (15 min service) and the RTA ArtWalk Express (30 min service) details of which appear on the ArtWalk map or you could just ask an “orange shirt”.

Another fun and entertaining aspect of the First Friday ArtWalk is the Prize Draw which takes place in La Retama Park at 8:45pm. As you tour the various ArtWalk locations Downtown you can ask at each Gallery, Shop, or Cultural Venue for raffle tickets to enter the draw. You will be given one set of double tickets per person so, the more venues you visit, the more tickets you collect, the greater your chance of winning one of the great prizes on offer each month.

Prizes generally include:
•    First Prize         -    Painting by David L Phillips            $500
•    Second Prize    -    SegCity 1 hour tour for 2                $100
•    Third Prize        -    DMD Downtown Gift Certificate    $50
•    Fourth Prize      -    DMD Downtown Gift Certificate    $25

The prize draw rules are very simple and finite:
•    One ticket per person per venue.
•    Only tickets issued on the night accepted.
•    Draw open to all ArtWalkers including venue owners and staff excluding organizers.
•    Tickets must have Venue and ArtWalker names written on them.
•    Must be present to win.
•    Disputes will be settled on site and DMD decision will be final.
•    Everyone should have a good time and enjoy ArtWalk!

Please do come on Downtown on the First Friday each month to show your support for the many people and businesses of this community that generously donate their time, effort, and resources to provide the public with an entertaining, enjoyable, and sociable experience on ArtWalk.

Specifically it is important to mention the ArtWalk sponsors each of whom contribute, in their own important way, to make ArtWalk a growing success:
•    Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation,
•    Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority,
•    Downtown Management District,
•    House of Rock,
•    K Space Contemporary,
•    Nueces County,
•    David L Phillips,
•    Produce Gallery,
•    SegCity Corpus,
•    Whetstone Graphics

December 2010 - Decorate Downtown 2010

Decorate Downtown 2010
By Alan S Albin  (Photos by Alan & Emily Albin)

Every year the Downtown Management District invites volunteers to dress up DTOWN for the Holiday Season.  It’s a cheerful community event with the morning spent wrapping bows and garlands on the light poles that adorn our streets.  It brings a festive spirit to DTOWN which benefits the community and tourism!

This year the event was adopted by the Downtown Attractiveness Committee which is chaired by DeeDee Perez of Hotel Corpus Christi Bayfront. This committee is charged with advocating for the development, funding, and implementation of Downtown improvements and so the Decorate Downtown event fits happily within their remit.

The DMD sponsors breakfast and lunch for the volunteers and a party atmosphere permeates the streets throughout the morning.

This year volunteer groups met up between 8 and 9:00 a.m. on November 20th at the 400 block of William Street where they registered with the DMD, collected their garlands and bows, and then moved on to La Bahia for a breakfast of tacos and orange juice before proceeding to their assigned streets to “Decorate Downtown”

A big THANK YOU is due to the groups and individuals who participated in this event which was finished by approx 11:30 am when everyone met up at House of Rock to exchange “Decorating Downtown” stories and to enjoy a pizza and soda lunch.

All the volunteers enjoyed their morning and are looking forward to the next event which will likely be held on Saturday November 19th, 2011 – save the date!

Parks and Recreation Department continued to work the following week to complete Water, Chaparral, and Mesquite streets.
