by Peggy Heuston
Tim and Peggy Heuston lived in South Dakota for many years where Tim had been in the John Deere business for 29 years and Peggy worked as a Licensed Mental Health Therapist. After constructing 21 ground floor townhouses/apartments in Pierre, S.D., they looked for and found a good manager and were then able to pursue their long time dream of moving to a warmer climate and living by the ocean. Peg and Tim purchased a home on the island but it wasn't long before retirement lost its initial delight for them and they began a quest to look for a business to own and operate in the beautiful sparkling City by the Sea that they now call home.
Trying to think of something to do for a living in Corpus Christi they consulted their network of friends and found that some had taken Segway Tours in Sonoma wine country and had a blast. So Peggy dragged Tim to Galveston to try Segways for themselves at Segcity. They had so much fun and met the nicest people with Segcity that they instantly looked in to starting their own touring company under Segcity’s franchise. Segcity Corpus started as a glimmer in Tim and Peggy’s eyes as they realized they had found a business that is extremely fun and entertaining for people combined with the ability for them to work on the beautiful bay front and seawall of Downtown Corpus Christi.
Segcity has been successfully promoting guided tours and selling Segways for several years in San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Galveston. Their knowledge and encouragement was very helpful and they welcomed the Heustons to promote this cool little machine to more people. Many people love to own their own Segway, and the Heustons can help realize that dream, but many more just want to build it in to their vacation or weekend by going on a guided tour and that is exactly what SegCity Corpus Christi is here to promote.
They had found the right business, the right people to help them get started and become an authorized Segway Tour Company, and they were off and running. Most coastal cities or cities that have something to show off already have Segway Tour companies. Corpus did not but it does have the most awesome seawall, bay, and beaches with many sights to see such as “Voyage” a self-guided walking tour of the scale model solar system, "Orion's Belt" by Robert Perless , the Water Garden, the new Bayfront Water park, the Ship Canal, the Lexington, The Columbus Ships, the T-Heads and L-Head, Heritage Park, the Museums and much more. The planets’ distances from each other are clearly comprehended when you are able to experience it on a Segway. There are so many things that can be pointed out on the Segway tours that even locals are amazed at some of the information provided. Tim has researched the history of the bay and has many interesting tidbits and facts to impart. It is a wonderful treat for a family and there are plans to start an evening tour that will be spectacularly beautiful.
A very important thing that people need to know is that they cannot rent out unaccompanied Segways and there are some good reasons for this policy. The Company offers guided tours. This is primarily because, although Segway riding is very safe, most people do not have a good understanding of the sophistication of this type of personal transporter. Legally, they can go anywhere a person can walk. There are five gyroscopes in each Segway which makes it self balancing. There is a computer on board that detects your body movements one hundred times a second. You have to know about the machine to ride it and each rider is given a ten minute lesson before their tour starts. If the machine were to get wet it could be damaged although it can handle a mild rainy day. Segways do not like big bumps and need level sidewalks with handicapped corners on the street to navigate safely. There are Segways with big tires that can be used on sandy beaches but they use more power and drain their batteries much quicker. The sand is not near as much fun as seeing the sights on a Segway as it effortlessly speeds along the sidewalk at up to 12 miles an hour. They are very economical as they are completely rechargeable and do not use gasoline.
So the bottom line is to go on a guided tour and have the most clean, green family fun you have had in a long time together. Seriously, people have a blast on these tours, they spend the whole time with a big happy smiles on their faces and say it made their vacation. Older people often think they will not be able to ride but they soon find that, once you get comfortable with “the controls” , they really can – and it beats walking miles in the heat and humidity! It isn’t hard to learn. Younger people catch on quickly but they have to be able to see over the handlebars so they can’t be too young. The recommended minimum age to participate in a Segway authorised tour is 14 years. Athletic ability is not important, learning what the machine can do is the key. Your spouse, children, parents, grandchildren, everyone remembers their first Segway Tour and who they were with at the time. It is memorable and fun and really not as expensive as you might think. There are group rates if you bring in more than four people for a tour. If money is tight, you can take a shorter tour. Most people have so much fun, they want to be on the Segway for at least an hour anyway and 1.5 and 2 hour tours are also available. Call some friends, ask that special person out for a date or take the family on a tour they will never forget. Right now we are open 7 days a week and no tour is too big or too small as we can make it happen to fit your needs. We are located centrally, close to the Downtown hotels and the seawall at 403 N. Shoreline Drive.
