December 2010 - LED Lighting Project

City, DMD use LED Technology
to Light Shoreline Sculpture
By Ericha Kemm

A work from Corpus Christi’s Public Art Collection installed in 2002 received special LED lighting as a pilot program for illuminating the Harbor Bridge.  The work was completed recently on the sculpture entitled Orion’s Belt, located at 1068 Shoreline Boulevard to test the feasibility of LED technology for illuminating large public works.  Financed with 2004 bond funds earmarked for lighting downtown, the project utilizes 12 “color shifting” can lights at the base of the sculpture. The color theme relates well to the wind-seeking sculptures, placed in the pattern of the primary stars in the Orion Constellation, but can be adjusted to any theme.   The project was made possible through the efforts of the DMD, City of Corpus Christi, and Naismith Engineering who provided work free of charge.

John Vidaurri, Executive Director of the DMD, describes the project: “The Downtown Management District was recently afforded an opportunity to partner with the City of Corpus Christi to install an LED lighting system on the Orion’s Belt sculptures.  Our DMD Board of Directors supported the partnership effort and our role in the partnership was to assist the City’s efforts to manage the project through to its fruition.  DMD believes that in addition to enhancing the aesthetics of the Corpus Christi skyline, the project is an outstanding effort to continue the use of green technology Downtown.  The new LED lighting system will be much more energy efficient than standard lighting and will significantly reduce the cost of electric service to power the lighting.  The lit system produces an array of colors that DMD feels will add some very attractive seasonal lighting to our Downtown skyline.”

Terry K Orf, Architect at Naismith Engineering, states that the LED lighting on Orion’s Belt will provide 11 years or roughly 50,000 hours of illumination before burning out, a vast improvement over older lighting fixtures which often can not stand up to our South Texas Climate. These programmable lights currently run the “Aurora Borealis” theme using blue, white and purple colors interspersed with quick pulses of red, orange and green.   An evening viewing of the sculpture, which is broken up into three sections, reveals to any viewer the challenges in lighting such slender metal forms.

Winds constantly shift the sculptures, making them a moving target for the LED lights.  Orf explains: “The biggest trick was providing light for a 360 degree area around the sculptures, so we used a special lens that spreads out the light over a wider distance.  Normally the lights reach farther out, but this lens shortens and widens the beam to accommodate our needs.”  Another challenge was getting electricity to that particular section of greenbelt on Shoreline Boulevard, which did not exist previously.  The Corpus Christi Gas company assisted by digging under the street for power.

It’s no small wonder that Orion’s Belt was chosen as a pilot program for lighting the Harbor Bridge.  With the upcoming bridge project, which has been a popular citizen request since Mayor Joe Adame has entered office, slender metal forms will require illumination, and although the bridge does not move, there promises to be many challenges in store.

The Orion’s Belt pilot LED project is another in a series to redevelop downtown.  Says Vidaurri, “The ongoing development and re-development of Downtown Corpus Christi is all about partnerships, whether they are public or private or a combination of both matters not.  Partnerships provide the impetus for successful Downtown redevelopment efforts in communities throughout our county, and local partnerships are providing that same impetus in Corpus as well.”

Description of Orion’s Belt from the
Corpus Christi Public Art Collection Publication,

Lynda Jones, Author
The Sculptures are placed in the pattern of the primary stars Ainitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka in the Orion Constellation at 1068 Shoreline.  Fourteen stainless steel pavers, identifying the secondary stars of the Constellation, are placed throughout the downtown area.  They are located as follows: Saiph is at the north end of People’s street T-head in the grass.  Rigel is on the jetty directly across from Orion’s Belt, Pi 2 is in the center of the Water Garden.  Omicron is on Mesquite and Brewster Streets near the Asian Culture Museum.  Bellatrix is at N. Mesquite and Fitzgerald Streets across for the Seamen’s Center.  Betelgeuse is located at W. Broadway and Waco Streets at the Old Bayview Cemetery.  Meissa is at Rescaca and Tancahua Streets.  Xi 1 is at the intersection of Lobo Lane, Chico Street and N. Staples Street.  Upsilon is at Staples and Ramirez Streets.  Chi 1 is located at Ramirez and N. Alameda Streets near Northside Manor Apartments and Chi2 is at Chipito and N. Alameda Streets.

December 2010 - Focus on New Business Downtown

Focus on new business Downtown
 By DMD Staff

For downtowns that are undergoing redevelopment and revitalization, new business growth is always a major focus, yet one of the most difficult to achieve.  However, Downtown Corpus Christi is fortunate to have a sustained a core of business activity from which to start.  It is this Downtown core that has served as an anchor for the attraction of new Downtown small business growth.

A cursory look at sales tax revenues and the number of new small business start-ups in neighborhoods outside of Downtown reveal that inner-city growth is outpacing other City growth in spite of the current economic climate.

“A review of sales tax revenues reveals that in spite of the recession and current economic doldrums, Downtown is one of the few Corpus Christi neighborhoods to show an increase in sales tax revenues which can be attributed in part to new business growth in our Downtown community as well as the stability of our core Downtown businesses”, said David Loeb, Chairman of the Board of the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District.  “Thanks in part to a huge amount of support from the City and the partnerships that have evolved within the past few years, we are seeing an increase in entrepreneurial and small business development the likes of which we have not seen in recent memory,” said Loeb.

Over a dozen new small businesses have established locations in Downtown Corpus in the past year, and the brief sampling here of four of those new businesses provides an excellent insight into not only the types of businesses that decided to locate Downtown but also an idea of what the new businesses hope to accomplish in their new Downtown locations.

December 2010 - Allgood Fitness

Allgood Fitness Downtown
By Kaitlin Steinberg

Dusty Oliveira aka DJ Dus is known about town for his musical talents, but he’s about to add another title to
his resume: fitness guru. OK, so he probably won’t start wearing neon sweatbands and spandex, but as one
of the owners and creators of AllGood Fitness, he’s about to start mixing up his act.

AllGood Fitness is set to open in late December in the Nueces Lofts building Downtown. Olivera is the
mastermind behind the concept for the new gym, but this is hardly his first turn as an entrepreneur. Along with
a few partners, Olivera also helped create Produce, a recording studio/boutique/gallery space known for its
innovative design work. Now that Produce has become a success, obviously the next step for Olivera is
to…open a gym?
“Why not?” he says. “There is a demand for fitness now in Corpus. You look at Austin and you see people
running and riding bikes everywhere. Trends always go south, so naturally we were the next to hit the fitness
wave.”
AllGood Fitness will cater to the young, urban professional, as well as the other diverse populations moving to
the Downtown area. The gym will have amenities like a dry sauna, towel service, personal training and of
course, a shower, for those who want to get in a quick work out before their 9-to-5 or during their lunch
break.
Classes will start once the gym’s juicebar opens early next year, but in the meantime, Olivera hopes to do
some specialized urban group training classes “to take advantage of the bayfront and our little concrete
jungle.”
AllGood Fitness will offer monthly memberships with specials for students and families, as well as corporate
wellness packages. The gym will also issue day passes during business hours, and members will be able to
bring guests if they choose. Members will be able to work out 24 hours a day.
With a little over a month until it opens, AllGood Fitness is starting to come together nicely. Olivera’s aim is to
create a fresh, relaxed atmosphere, which will no doubt be punctuated by elements of design from the team
behind Produce. Olivera also wants great music in his space, and as a DJ, he should be able to provide some
high-energy tunes to sweat to.
“This is not like any other spot in town,” Olivera promises. “You will be able to come here, get in a quick
work out, get fresh, and get back to work.”

December 2010 - Peace of Mind Massage

Peace of Mind Massage Therapy & Natural Healing
By Jynelle Ornelas

Peace of Mind Massage Therapy & Natural Healing is a New Woman Owned Business based on mother nature‘s common grounds, located at 602 N Lower Broadway where Peoples St meets the wall to Uptown , Opened July 10th 2010.
Peace of Mind will transform all of your aches and pains, internal and external, into comfort by giving you ease and relief with massage therapy and natural healing. LMT: Jynelle Ornelas and LMT: Rosalinda Hernandez have made massage and natural healing their passion. Their education and techniques stemmed from the Austin school of massage therapy and homeopathic remedies passed down from past generations.
We all have stress, tension, aches and pains that we experience and need to give attention to, in order to take care of our bodies, we only get one body. Everyone experiences stress from everyday living, we feel tension laced throughout our muscles sometimes accompanied by aches and pain from old accidents, medical conditions, and repetitive hard work we put our bodies thought daily. No matter what your occupation working too long without a break creates tension in your back, shoulders, and neck muscles, tired eyes , and slower , more easily irritated mental process. Human touch increases the production of endorphins, growth hormone, along with DHEA, all of which lengthen your life span and lower the negative impact of stress. Studies have found that patients who are regularly touched recover faster than those who are not touched. So get a massage and feel your mood improve. We have heard many people complain of being over medicated, tired and stressed. With every massage we give the option of mankind’s first medicine which consists of 100% natural oils combined into your massage cream or oils, and other healing earth products. We invite you to come in anytime or call to schedule a massage to get a kick start in your wellness plan. We offer chair massage, table massage, weight loss wraps and cellulite fighting wraps, wrinkle reducers and skin tighten wraps along with facials. And the power of the hot stone massage, hot-cupping, and hot wax treatments for relief of arthritis and skin soften. Deep tissue massage, reflexology, pressure point release, and couples massage. Massage parties and Office chair massage packets.
Our services are available 7 days a week by appointment; walk-ins are also welcomed from 10:00 am till 8:30 every day, to fit your busy hectic schedule.

December 2010 - Sushibar Downtown

Hybridspace Concept - Sushibar and Stereo Musicbar
By Kaitlin Steinberg

Warning: What you are about to read will make you salivate. Go ahead and grab some napkins now.

Ninja Noodle. Gold Chain Roll. Kobe Beef Slider. These inventive concoctions are just some of the delicious offerings at the new Sushibar Downtown, part of Hybridspace Concept. The original Sushibar on the Island has been such a huge success that the owners, David Le and his wife Julie, decided to open another branch Downtown.

Hybridspace Concept houses both Sushibar and Stereo Musicbar, providing a venue for hip Corpus Christi folk to eat great food, hear live music and socialize in a swanky, lounge atmosphere. After dining on creative, fusion cuisine at Sushibar, patrons can make their way into Stereo Musicbar to continue the party into the night.

When searching for locations for the new restaurant, Le thought it made perfect sense to house Hybridspace Concept in the same building as Aria, the popular Downtown club. The combination of Stereo Musicbar’s tunes, Sushibar’s chow and Aria’s sophisticated club vibe create what Le calls “an explosive energy,” that is already helping to revitalize local nightlife.

“People don’t expect this type of place in Corpus,” says Le, “yet the people who have created it all are locals. It’s really a Corpus space.”

All of the chefs are local as well, and all of the recipes are created by Le and head chef David Lee. Most of Sushibar’s offerings are small plates that combine traditional Asian ingredients with more familiar recipes, like Harissa-Marinated Lamb Chops and Sushibar Fish Tacos.

Some of the more innovative offerings include the Geisha Roll, which consists of blackened tuna, smoked eel, cream cheese, avocado, soft shell crab and jalapeno, and the Godzilla Roll, a tantalizing combination of fresh tuna, salmon, escalar, yellow tail, hamachi and avocado on top of cream cheese and crab.

Not only is David Le a sushi mastermind, he is also a founder of Produce, a gallery/music studio/boutique that has been making big waves in the Downtown art scene with its alternative exhibits. The gang behind Produce creates hip and catchy promotional videos and ad campaigns for the Sushibar brand, which can be found on the restaurant’s website. Le and his wife are also planning to open a Southside branch of Sushibar early next year, which is good news for sushi lovers throughout Corpus.

Sushibar Downtown is open for lunch from 11 AM-1:45 PM Tuesday-Friday and for dinner from 5 PM-10 PM Tuesday-Saturday. Happy Hour is Tuesday-Friday from 5 PM-7 PM.

December 2010 - Tease Salon

Tease Salon
By Jeffrey L. Linthicum

If you want to see what a successful step towards downtown revitalization looks like, take a peek inside Tease Full Service Salon, which opened in October at 429 William Street, between La Bahia Restaurant & Dentoni's Pizza. The 3,000+ square foot facility has been transformed, thanks to the visionary efforts of business partners Kevin Murphy and Sara M. Butcher and the amazing design team at Business Interiors of South Texas.
"We weren't looking to move from our location (formerly Doohicki's) at Gaslight Square," said Owner and Stylist Kevin Murphy, "but when I took one look at the space, I knew we were ready to be back downtown. I love it here." Murphy, a notable local stylist for nearly 25 years, partnered in a salon called Planet Hair that was located in the same space over a decade ago. "It just feels 'right' to be back."
Murphy partnered with Sara Butcher for this venture. Sara, a bubbly beauty with mile-long legs, who is known for her precision cuts and styling, was the burst of fresh, youthful energy that Murphy needed to commit to make the move. "She is a ball of energy with a 'get it done' attitude," says Murphy. That is evident when Butcher gives first-timers the 'Grand Tour'.
"I love coming to work in this beautiful space!" Butcher beams proudly. It's easy to understand why. Dramatic, soaring interiors and soothing colors dominate the open and airy, loft-style space. Mod furnishings, huge tropical plants and intriguing art are dotted throughout the salon, which features space for 8-10 stylists, a Massage Therapist, a Nail Technician and a Facialist. "People are already booking the space for parties!" She boasts. "I guess that means we did something right!"
But Tease Salon is not just another 'pretty face'. The salon also offers a coterie of award-winning services from a team of well-heeled professionals. Alongside Kevin and Sara, you'll find several other recognizable local beauty specialists.
Stylist P.J. Harkins has been been beautifying clients for 36 years, but always keeps her finger on the pulse of the latest trends. P.J. styled hair in Hollywood for many years and has had her hands in the mane's of such screen icons as Meg Tilly, Eric Stoltz and June Lockhart. She has also served as a Guest Artist for international beauty labels like Redkin and Helene Curtis.
Robert Garcia, Stylist and Make-Up Artist, has over 15 years of experience in the beauty business, has worked wtih three Miss USA titleholders and is currently styling MIss Teen Texas USA. During a stint on San Antonio's 'Great Day S.A' morning program, he styled notables including Eva Longoria, Oscar De La Hoya, Matthew McConaughey, Ladybird Johnson and Nellie Connally.
Nail Technician Diana Cruz is a fixture in the Corpus Christi salon scene and has worked as a coveted Nail Technician for 30 years. She closely guards her technique, but it is common knowledge that pedicures and manicures from the specialist are a 'must have' treat.
Stylist Tim Tate has 14 years of hair experience and has worked across Texas in high-end salons like Toni & Guy and Aveda. He also enjoys a second career as a therapist for at-risk youth and will begin training in 2011 as a representative for famous haircare company Farouk.
Tease also features a unique, new service addition - Bleach Bright teeth whitening, offered in-house by Owner/Technician Piper Precious. Piper, former owner of La Femme Boutique, also serves as Kevin's 'right hand' and is also a liscensed Manicurist.
"We are still building our team," says Butcher. "but our great core group from Doohicki's remains. It's important to us to fill the salon with people that really meld well together and contribute to our business and our general atmosphere."
Kevin and Sara invite you to experience their salon and spa services including cutting, coloring, styling, manicures, facials, waxing and Bleach Bright teeth whitening in just 20 minutes. The team there also offers special event hair and make-up application and a full line of hair and beauty products. By appointment Tuesday through Saturday by calling (361)882-2191.

December 2010 - First Friday ArtWalk

First Friday ArtWalk
By Alan S Albin

ArtWalk is a monthly Downtown Corpus Christi event held, on the First Friday of every month from 5:30 to 9pm. It is organized by the Downtown Management District in association with K Space Contemporary and the assistance of several other sponsors.
Although it started as a specific “Art” event the direction it has taken is very much that of a “neighborhood event” involving more than just the art community of Downtown.
Indeed ArtWalk has grown from 5 venues to 56 participating businesses as of the December event. This expansion has prompted the grouping of venues into the following categories thus allowing any Downtown business to take a legitimate role within the First Friday ArtWalk event:

•    Galleries                   The “core” ArtWalk venues
•    Cultural Venues        usually involving art or artists
•    Shops                       many with art on display and for sale
•    Restaurants & Bars   all offering discounts & specials, some with art on display
•    Other                        venues which do not fit the other categories but wish to be
involved in ArtWalk either as art venues or sponsors

ArtWalk is based in La Retama Park, which is the triangular park between Peoples Street and Schatzell Street in the shadow of the Wells Fargo Building, and the fun begins at 5:30pm when a band begins to play and the DTown tram takes off on its’ first tour of the ArtWalk circuit.
WaterStreet Market is another large enclave of ArtWalk venues and there is always a band playing there and art vendors outside the shops. The WaterStreet group of restaurants usually have specials and discounts on offer each ArtWalk evening and, weather permitting, operate their Tiki bar outside in the market square.
The Art Center of Corpus Christi at 100 Shoreline is the third focal point of the ArtWalk where music is provided and vendors are always present in addition to the monthly rotating gallery exhibits. Desiree’s by the Bay restaurant is also open for dinner on ArtWalk nights.
The Center on South Water Street is another central point on the ArtWalk. Whilst it is quite far from the central Downtown hub of the event  it can be easily reached by taking the RTA ArtWalk Express from La Retama Park; once there you will have 30 minutes to visit with the many businesses located in The Center before catching the next “Express” to continue visiting with other ArtWalk locations.

The DTown tram has HOBO on board playing their unique brand of “honkadelic” music and they have become a major attraction on ArtWalk as they sing and play their, sometimes irreverent (but always family friendly) way, around Downtown. Many people simply ride the tram to benefit from this only one of its kind experience.
ArtWalk takes place come rain or shine and in the unlikely event of inclement weather The Art Center of Corpus Christi at 100 Shoreline is our alternate “Hub” where the La Retama Park vendors, band, and prize draw will relocate if necessary.

Maps of Downtown showing the ArtWalk venues, the tram route, and the RTA direct shuttle route are available at the following locations:
•    DMD booth in La Retama Park
•    K Space Contemporary on Starr Street
•    On the DTown tram and the RTA ArtWalk Express
•    The Art Center of Corpus Christi
•    The Center on South Water Street (Tango Tea Room)
•    From First Friday Ambassadors and Volunteers throughout Downtown
(look for the orange polo shirts on Segways and orange T-Shirts on foot.)

In addition to a band in the park there are always a good number of vendors set up there to provide ArtWalkers with a selection of items to view and hopefully buy. We are always looking for new vendors to help make Artwalk more diverse, interesting, and entertaining so if you, or someone you know, would like to join us please contact Michelle Smythe of K Space Contemporary on 361-887-6834 for details of how to participate.
During the winter season we will have a light tower in the Park to supplement the City street lighting after dark. This will also enable us to provide power for the bands and maybe some decorative lighting for the vendors’ booths. If you have any thoughts on how to improve the ArtWalk experience either in the park or around Downtown please contact Alan Albin of the DMD on 361-882-2363.

Although there will always be lots of exciting things going on at the four major locations please do make an effort to tour the other venues which are scattered throughout the Downtown area. Most of these venues can be comfortably reached on foot, it is after all, - ArtWalk. However to reach some of the outlying venues such as The Yachting Center on the People St T-Head, The Center at 505 S Water Street, and even the Art Center at 100 Shoreline, you may wish to take advantage of the DTown tram (15 min service) and the RTA ArtWalk Express (30 min service) details of which appear on the ArtWalk map or you could just ask an “orange shirt”.

Another fun and entertaining aspect of the First Friday ArtWalk is the Prize Draw which takes place in La Retama Park at 8:45pm. As you tour the various ArtWalk locations Downtown you can ask at each Gallery, Shop, or Cultural Venue for raffle tickets to enter the draw. You will be given one set of double tickets per person so, the more venues you visit, the more tickets you collect, the greater your chance of winning one of the great prizes on offer each month.

Prizes generally include:
•    First Prize         -    Painting by David L Phillips            $500
•    Second Prize    -    SegCity 1 hour tour for 2                $100
•    Third Prize        -    DMD Downtown Gift Certificate    $50
•    Fourth Prize      -    DMD Downtown Gift Certificate    $25

The prize draw rules are very simple and finite:
•    One ticket per person per venue.
•    Only tickets issued on the night accepted.
•    Draw open to all ArtWalkers including venue owners and staff excluding organizers.
•    Tickets must have Venue and ArtWalker names written on them.
•    Must be present to win.
•    Disputes will be settled on site and DMD decision will be final.
•    Everyone should have a good time and enjoy ArtWalk!

Please do come on Downtown on the First Friday each month to show your support for the many people and businesses of this community that generously donate their time, effort, and resources to provide the public with an entertaining, enjoyable, and sociable experience on ArtWalk.

Specifically it is important to mention the ArtWalk sponsors each of whom contribute, in their own important way, to make ArtWalk a growing success:
•    Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation,
•    Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority,
•    Downtown Management District,
•    House of Rock,
•    K Space Contemporary,
•    Nueces County,
•    David L Phillips,
•    Produce Gallery,
•    SegCity Corpus,
•    Whetstone Graphics

December 2010 - Decorate Downtown 2010

Decorate Downtown 2010
By Alan S Albin  (Photos by Alan & Emily Albin)

Every year the Downtown Management District invites volunteers to dress up DTOWN for the Holiday Season.  It’s a cheerful community event with the morning spent wrapping bows and garlands on the light poles that adorn our streets.  It brings a festive spirit to DTOWN which benefits the community and tourism!

This year the event was adopted by the Downtown Attractiveness Committee which is chaired by DeeDee Perez of Hotel Corpus Christi Bayfront. This committee is charged with advocating for the development, funding, and implementation of Downtown improvements and so the Decorate Downtown event fits happily within their remit.

The DMD sponsors breakfast and lunch for the volunteers and a party atmosphere permeates the streets throughout the morning.

This year volunteer groups met up between 8 and 9:00 a.m. on November 20th at the 400 block of William Street where they registered with the DMD, collected their garlands and bows, and then moved on to La Bahia for a breakfast of tacos and orange juice before proceeding to their assigned streets to “Decorate Downtown”

October 2010 - Dia de los Muertos

Dia De Los Muertos Street Festival
By: Jennifer Rhea

Friday, October 29, 2010:  5:30 to Midnight
Location: 400 block of Starr Street

For thousands of years multiple cultures in many countries have gathered to celebrate and honor friends and family members who have passed away by holding a Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration.  In many countries the holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember their friends and family members who have died. The celebration most often occurs on November 2nd in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1st) and All Souls' Day (November 2nd).  It is common for family members in some societies to erect alters in honor of the deceased and to visit their graves with the favorite foods and beverages of the departed which is why it is not surprising that Dia de Los Muertos is a time of celebration where partying is very common place. The current mixing of more traditional Latin American and Mexican cultures with the modern art landscape of South Texas has provided the citizens of Corpus Christi with a unique venue to celebrate their lost loved ones.

While Corpus Christi may not be alone in celebrating Dia de los Muertos it certainly has put its’ own spin on the event.  That’s why in 2008 Axis Tattoo (then Electra Art) and K-Space Contemporary teamed up to show appreciation for their patrons and to add to the Downtown atmosphere by taking to the streets to celebrate.  Because of the very positive feedback, and the aspiration to try and top the year before, the event has grown into one of the most popular in the Downtown area.  In 2009 the Downtown Management District (DMD) came on board as major sponsor of the Dia de los Muertos Starr Street Festival and provided a cash and in kind sponsorship which allowed the festival to expand successfully and plan for future events with more certainty. In 2010 the DMD has again provided the same level of sponsorship ($5,000) and is very pleased to be associated with an event which brings so many people into the Downtown area.

If you have never been out to Starr Street for the Dia De Los Muertos Festival (www.facebook.com/dayofthedeadcc) then make sure you join the celebration right after work Friday, October 29th. Belinda Edwards of Axis Tattoo works hard to put together the best combination of musicians and artists and the schedule this year is truly exciting. All night the streets will be flooded with music from three really great bands, two DJ’s, dancers with giveaways, costume contests and a few surprises for willing participants. Family fun is what is expected this year, “The greatest memory we have is seeing everyone with their families and friends having a safe and fun time enjoying the art, music and food, “says Edwards.

Corpus Christi’s festival will appeal to all people of all ages and families. Michelle Smyth of K-Space explains, “This year we are adding an area where children can do art projects.   K Space will have a community altar, and I will be exhibiting a painting dedicated to young women who have lost their lives at an early age called “Letter to my Mother.”

By sponsoring a local Downtown event and promoting the use of Downtown venues, the DMD hopes to bring more people to the Downtown area. The face of Downtown is changing to become a place where locals can bring their friends and family to take part in monthly events like the First Friday ArtWalk and individual celebrations like the K-Space Wig Out and the Dia de los Muertos Street Festival.  The support of these events by Downtown businesses and the DMD along with (most importantly) the attendance of local patrons is quickly allowing the vision of a vibrant Downtown to take shape.

October 2010 - First Friday ArtWalk

First Friday ArtWalk
By Alan S Albin

Friday October 1st is the third ArtWalk in the new format and things are beginning to fall into place. It’s early days yet but the Downtown ArtWalk is showing signs of emulating the success other big cities have had  with their long running ArtWalks.
Our “First Friday” has been designed to be an “umbrella event” under which the Downtown community can organize not only the monthly ArtWalk but also add on any other activities to benefit from the branding and marketing associated with “First Fridays”.
The main reason for adopting this format is to make it easy for everyone to remember that something exciting and interesting goes on Downtown on the First Friday of every month. Visitors to Downtown, whether they be Corpus Christi residents or tourists, are guaranteed a warm welcome at up to 50 Downtown businesses which open their doors to ArtWalkers from 5:30 to 9pm on ArtWalk nights. Many of these businesses offer refreshments and entertainment and some also offer door prizes and ArtWalk specials.
(Some businesses may not be able to participate in ArtWalk every month due to scheduling conflicts but everyone on the map is an enthusiastic supporter of ArtWalk and will be open whenever possible.)

•    On the DTown tram and RTA Shuttle

As we move into the winter season, from October 1st, we will have a light tower in the Park to supplement the City street lighting after dark. This will also enable us to provide power for the bands and maybe some decorative lighting for the vendors’ booths. If you have any thoughts on how to improve the ArtWalk experience either in the park or around Downtown please contact Alan Albin of the DMD on 361-882-2363.

Although there will always be lots of exciting things going on in the park please do make an effort to tour the other venues which are scattered throughout the Downtown area. Most of these venues can be comfortably reached on foot, it is after all, - ArtWalk. However to reach some of the outlying venues such as The Yachting Center on the People St T-Head, The Center at 505 S Water Street, and even the Art Center at 100 Shoreline, you may wish to take advantage of the DTown tram and the RTA shuttle details of which appear on the ArtWalk map or you could just ask an “orange shirt”.

Another fun and entertaining aspect of the First Friday ArtWalk is the Prize Draw which takes place in La Retama Park at 8:45pm. As you tour the various ArtWalk locations Downtown you can ask each vendor if they have raffle tickets available for the draw. Those that do have these tickets will give you one set of double tickets per person so, the more venues you visit, the more tickets you collect, the greater your chance of winning one of the great prizes on offer each month.

Prizes for the October 1st draw:
•    First Prize        -    Painting by David L Phillips         $500
•    Second Prize    -    DMD Downtown Gift Certificate    $50
•    Third Prize    -    SegCity 10 min taster for 2        $40
•    Fourth Prize    -    DMD Downtown Gift Certificate    $25
•    Fifth Prize    -    Morgan’s Sports Bar (Food only)    $20

Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation, Downtown Management District, House of Rock,
K Space Contemporary, Nueces County, David L Phillips,
Produce Gallery, SegCity Corpus, Whetstone Graphics.

October 2010 - Morgan's Sports Bar and Grill

Come in to Morgan's Sports Bar and Grill
Newly opened Morgan’s Sports Bar and Grill brings something innovative to Downtown Corpus Christi, with 10 flat screen HD TV’s and a Direct TV package that allows them to show equally as many games at any given time, this is a true sports bar.

Owners Bill and Libby Morgan, who also own Bubba's Ice House on S.P.I.D., are passionate about being part of the revitalization of Downtown Corpus Christi. Bill and Libby have lived in Corpus Christi for 20 years, and moved Downtown, as the first residents at the newly opened Nueces Lofts, last fall. After moving Downtown, the potential for the area became even more evident to them. They are hoping the bar will attract a young professional crowd and give business people in the area a fun, comfortable place to hang out. Bill and Libby are taking a cue from their success at Bubba's bringing a fun atmosphere, great service, and delicious food to Morgan's.

The space on the corner of Chaparral and Peoples Streets is decorated with sports memorabilia and features an open floor plan with plenty of tables and bar space for fans to hang out and cheer on their teams.
They’ve got everything you need while watching the big game. Morgan's has a full bar and a menu that offers way more than just bar snacks. From grilled chicken salads to made to order burgers, you can fill up during the game.

Bill and Libby's son Buck Morgan is the general manager, and John Sixta will be managing the kitchen. You may recognize their names as the owners of SixBucks Catering. If you have been lucky enough to attend one of their catering events, you know their food is great and their attention to detail and service is outstanding. Bubba's regulars will recognize friendly and fun loving sisters Laura and Mary Champagne. Mary will be serving up drinks from behind the bar, while Laura will be in the front of the house. Laura's main priority is providing excellent service, and you can be sure she will have a great time doing it.

Morgan’s is open for lunch from 11 – 2 on weekdays and, in addition to the regular menu, will serve specials such as Irish egg rolls (sauerkraut and corned beef filling in a traditional egg roll wrapper) and pizza burgers.
While they promise to get you in and out on your lunch hour you will want to head back after work and stay a while for the extra long happy hour.

Weekdays from 5 – 8 PM, Morgan’s happy hour features reduced price call drinks and pints, not to mention $3.00 appetizers like fried macaroni and cheese.
As if this wasn't enough, don't miss the fifty cent wings on Monday nights from 7:00 to close. On weekends the bar opens at noon, so get there early to take your seat for the game!

Morgan’s Sports Bar and Grill is located at 601 Chaparral Street on the corner of Peoples.

October 2010 - Dancing Through Downtown

American Diabetes Association

American Diabetes Association (ADA) will hold the 8th annual “Dancing Through Downtown” walk presented by the Port Industries of Corpus Christi to be held on Saturday, October 9th  at Whataburger Field beginning at 7:30 a.m.  This year’s “Dancing Through Downtown” Walk is co-chaired by local attorney, Arnold Gonzales, Jr., Janice Cubellis,  Director of Human Resources for Trinity Towers and Wes Gore, General Manager Central West Region for NuStar Energy.  This year’s Honorary Chairman is CCISD Superintendent, Scott Elliff.
Dancing Through Downtown, a truly unique community event, began eight years ago when local community leader and restaurateur, Brad Lomax chaired the walk.  Recognizing the seriousness of diabetes and how the disease was affecting our community, Brad staged an event that touched every cross section of our community. He plotted a walk route that traversed the uptown and downtown areas. He recruited entertainment from around the Coastal Bend to entertain and delight walkers along the way. He also involved community leaders to join the fun. The enthusiasm for the walk continues to grow as the community comes together each year to raise awareness about diabetes, honor those with diabetes, and to raise the important funds needed to fight the disease.

As this year’s Honorary Chairman, Scott Elliff, C.C.I.S.D. Superintendent, is asking the community to, “Step Up To The Challenge” to be healthier and once again join the walk.  “We have a crisis in our community with obesity and diabetes impacting people of all ages— especially for our youngsters; adults must be role models of healthy living.  Every person, taking even a small step towards increasing their exercise or improving their eating habits can make a huge difference for Corpus Christi and our future.”
“Participating in the American Diabetes Association walk is an example of a healthy activity that also shows a unified and symbolic commitment to reversing the devastating impact of this disease.”

On Saturday, October 9, 2010, registration for the walk begins at 7:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:00 a.m.  Walkers will get energized with a vigorous warm-up led by Zumama Fitness! Then at the sound of the sirens, joggers, cyclists and walkers will proceed to N. Tancahua Street and follow the parade route as it winds through the uptown and downtown area. Leading the parade of walkers this year will be the Downtown Management District’s brightly painted tram driven by Alan Albin, Special Projects Coordinator! On board the tram will be Dexter, Dance till Dawn Entertainment, to encourage and entertain walkers while announcing the more-than  twenty entertainment venues along the route. Cheerleaders, clowns, folklorico dancers, musicians, rock bands, jazz bands, twirlers, and elementary school spirit teams are among the highlights.  The entertainers generously donate their time and talents for this special Saturday morning.
The fun is sure to keep the heart pumping and feet moving! What better way to get fit and serve a great cause at the same time! There will be awards for Best Costume, Team with Most Walkers, Top Fundraising Team and Best T-shirt Design.
“Local refining and petrochemical industry recognizes that a diabetes epidemic is plaguing our community,” said Wes Gore, co-chair. “Unfortunately, this trend is expected to continue unless local industry and the entire community join together to fight diabetes in the Coastal Bend. Our involvement with the American Diabetes Association is to not only to raise awareness about diabetes, but to educate and encourage people to change behaviors toward a healthier lifestyle, with focus on exercise and diet.  Also, we hope to raise seriously needed funds to fight the fight against this devastating disease,” added Gore.   “We hope our community rallies around this walk because it’s an opportunity for people in the Coastal Bend to step out and do something--volunteer, form a team, and donate money—to help those who daily endure diabetes and its related illnesses. Ultimately, we want to help make our community a better, a healthier place to live and work.”
Major local sponsors for the event include Port Industries of Corpus Christi, NuStar Energy, Valero, H.E.B., Navy Army Federal Credit Union, Flint Hills Resources, Oxy Chem, Sherwin Alumina, Clear Channel Radio, Corpus Christi Hooks and the Port of Corpus Christi. Other sponsors include CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, Downtown Management District, Nurses on Wheels, CITGO Corpus Christi Refinery, KIII TV3, Driscoll Children’s Hospital, Corpus Christi Medical Center and State Representative Todd Hunter.
Today, more than 75,000 people in Coastal Bend Area are living with diabetes. Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of serious complications including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, and a number of other life threatening effects.
The American Diabetes Association is the nation’s leading voluntary non-profit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Our mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. We lead the fight against the deadly consequences of diabetes and fight for all those affected – by diabetes.
•    We fund research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes.
•    We deliver services to hundreds of communities.
•    We provide objective and credible information.
•    We give voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes.

New Downtown Mural.
K Space Contemporary will be unveiling a new mural at the 1st First Friday ArtWalk KickOff Party on August 6th. The mural is located in the La Retama ramp leading to the Downtown tunnel.
Teen painting students in K Space Contemporary’s Grande Art Adventures worked on the mural, titled Aquatic Center. The workshop was led by Patrick Richards of Architectural Details and Michelle Smythe.  The ramp walls have been transformed into a scene of realistic stone framework with windows revealing underwater scenes of kids in a swimming pool.   It looks as if the kids are in an aquarium as you walk through the mural - almost like they are swimming in a water-filled storefront building.   Everything in the painting is oversized so that visitors are confronted with four-foot-tall kids’ faces peeking out of the aquarium.  K Space sends out special thanks to sponsors of the mural: Grande Communications, City of Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation, Corpus Christi Gas Department, Ashmore Paint and the DMD.

August 2010 - First Friday ArtWalk

First Friday ArtWalk
By: Jennifer Cave-Rhea

Humble beginnings and Thursday nights dot the path of what once was a little known get together of a shared love for art and an idea of what the Downtown area could transform itself into.  Starting Friday August 6th at 5:30pm in La Retama Park, the First Friday ArtWalk Kick-off event begins with a joint Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony performed by the Honorable Mayor Joe Adame and Chair of the Downtown Management District, David Loeb. Immediately following the ribbon cutting The Electrotypes will take to the stage to mark a new era for both the ever expanding ArtWalk and the Downtown district that it calls home. Music, fun and festivities are open to all until the conclusion of the first ever First Friday ArtWalk with a prize drawing around 8:45 PM in the park.

For those that have never before experienced ArtWalk a little history lesson may be helpful.  What now sprawls over the Downtown area, up and down the never ending one-way streets was once limited to five venues and a budget that left a lot to be desired.   Word of mouth and the use of traditional and social media (more on that later) have helped the event reach out to existing and new businesses and expand on what each new venue could add to the experience.

Obviously the ArtWalk did not manifest itself into what it is today without the help of a few key individuals and a shared goal.  It all started in 2003 with then DMD Director Norma Urban and her assistant Heidi Hovda. It normally involved a single venue or was centered around a single City block with invitations to artists to display their works. In 2007 numerous businesses expressed interest in participating in EVERY ArtWalk and it became an event in which any Downtown business could participate.

The ArtWalk is not just an event in which Downtown businesses bask in the rays of free advertising but they also put in a huge amount of effort in the revitalization of a once forgotten Downtown as longtime ArtWalk devotee and K Space Contemporary Director Michelle Smythe remembers, “We have participated in the ArtWalk since its inception in 2003.  We have also worked with the DMD to paint murals on the Lichtenstein Building and decorate Downtown for Christmas. K Space artists worked with students to paint the    traffic control boxes around Downtown, and K Space artists also painted the DTown tram that transports ArtWalkers from venue to venue.”  In 2009, Alan Albin joined the DMD as Special Projects Coordinator and he deserves a lot of credit for growing the event with his regular visits to venues and encouragement of even more Downtown businesses to join the Artwalk as it helps reconnect Corpus Christi residents with their Downtown. “Each business has a part to play in the revitalization of Downtown but many folks have no idea what exists here already and ArtWalk is helping to change that situation,” said Albin.  He is a great believer in Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as “traditional” Web Sites when it comes to promoting ArtWalk and with over 1,200 Facebook fans, and an ArtWalk Twitter account for instant interaction, Albin wants to use every available angle for getting the word out. “In the future we’re fixing to have some live streaming video from ArtWalk events and also have volunteers “Tweet” as they ride the tram and visit venues,”  “We are hoping to encourage local videographers, anyone from an amateur Blackberry enthusiast to professional film makers, to submit video of ArtWalk events which we will then package between "branded" start and end pieces for use in Social Media and perhaps even in TV advertising.”
“Produce Gallery, on Peoples Street, has been very active in the ArtWalk branding process and have put a lot of work into helping us get to where we are today; embarking on the process of fixing the First Friday ArtWalk brand in the public consciousness.”

Back to the present we find ourselves at an exciting new beginning for the ArtWalk.  As “First Fridays” begin we have the comfort of knowing that ArtWalk has not only evolved for the better but now forms the base vehicle for events Downtown.  Numerous sponsors including the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District, K Space, Produce Gallery and Whetstone Graphics aim to make this a memorable event while artist David L. Phillips has agreed to sponsor ArtWalk for 12 months by donating an original piece of artwork each month to the prize draw held at the evening’s conclusion.  For those who wish, the absolutely free DTown Tram is ready to transport you from venue to venue while the always entertaining HOBO fills the air with their unique “honkadelic” sounds. You can collect raffle tickets from each venue visited and participate in the ArtWalk prize draw, which ensures a chance to win the original David L. Phillips piece of art, or just enjoy the complimentary refreshments, unique entertainment and numerous discounts offered at many ArtWalk venues.

The evolution from a five venue, low-budget operation to the current 43 venues and perhaps a slightly increased budget exhibits the real idea of what our Downtown can become.  The effort of a few individuals, numerous businesses and sponsors, showcases the investment, dedication and resources that have been channeled back into Downtown to revive this area that was once written off by so many.  As a passionate proponent of ArtWalk I encourage all residents and visitors to take part in this “First Friday” ArtWalk experience and enjoy the businesses of Downtown in an atmosphere like no other.
