December 2010 - Sushibar Downtown

Hybridspace Concept - Sushibar and Stereo Musicbar
By Kaitlin Steinberg

Warning: What you are about to read will make you salivate. Go ahead and grab some napkins now.

Ninja Noodle. Gold Chain Roll. Kobe Beef Slider. These inventive concoctions are just some of the delicious offerings at the new Sushibar Downtown, part of Hybridspace Concept. The original Sushibar on the Island has been such a huge success that the owners, David Le and his wife Julie, decided to open another branch Downtown.

Hybridspace Concept houses both Sushibar and Stereo Musicbar, providing a venue for hip Corpus Christi folk to eat great food, hear live music and socialize in a swanky, lounge atmosphere. After dining on creative, fusion cuisine at Sushibar, patrons can make their way into Stereo Musicbar to continue the party into the night.

When searching for locations for the new restaurant, Le thought it made perfect sense to house Hybridspace Concept in the same building as Aria, the popular Downtown club. The combination of Stereo Musicbar’s tunes, Sushibar’s chow and Aria’s sophisticated club vibe create what Le calls “an explosive energy,” that is already helping to revitalize local nightlife.

“People don’t expect this type of place in Corpus,” says Le, “yet the people who have created it all are locals. It’s really a Corpus space.”

All of the chefs are local as well, and all of the recipes are created by Le and head chef David Lee. Most of Sushibar’s offerings are small plates that combine traditional Asian ingredients with more familiar recipes, like Harissa-Marinated Lamb Chops and Sushibar Fish Tacos.

Some of the more innovative offerings include the Geisha Roll, which consists of blackened tuna, smoked eel, cream cheese, avocado, soft shell crab and jalapeno, and the Godzilla Roll, a tantalizing combination of fresh tuna, salmon, escalar, yellow tail, hamachi and avocado on top of cream cheese and crab.

Not only is David Le a sushi mastermind, he is also a founder of Produce, a gallery/music studio/boutique that has been making big waves in the Downtown art scene with its alternative exhibits. The gang behind Produce creates hip and catchy promotional videos and ad campaigns for the Sushibar brand, which can be found on the restaurant’s website. Le and his wife are also planning to open a Southside branch of Sushibar early next year, which is good news for sushi lovers throughout Corpus.

Sushibar Downtown is open for lunch from 11 AM-1:45 PM Tuesday-Friday and for dinner from 5 PM-10 PM Tuesday-Saturday. Happy Hour is Tuesday-Friday from 5 PM-7 PM.
