Focus on new business Downtown
By DMD Staff
For downtowns that are undergoing redevelopment and revitalization, new business growth is always a major focus, yet one of the most difficult to achieve. However, Downtown Corpus Christi is fortunate to have a sustained a core of business activity from which to start. It is this Downtown core that has served as an anchor for the attraction of new Downtown small business growth.
A cursory look at sales tax revenues and the number of new small business start-ups in neighborhoods outside of Downtown reveal that inner-city growth is outpacing other City growth in spite of the current economic climate.
“A review of sales tax revenues reveals that in spite of the recession and current economic doldrums, Downtown is one of the few Corpus Christi neighborhoods to show an increase in sales tax revenues which can be attributed in part to new business growth in our Downtown community as well as the stability of our core Downtown businesses”, said David Loeb, Chairman of the Board of the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District. “Thanks in part to a huge amount of support from the City and the partnerships that have evolved within the past few years, we are seeing an increase in entrepreneurial and small business development the likes of which we have not seen in recent memory,” said Loeb.
Over a dozen new small businesses have established locations in Downtown Corpus in the past year, and the brief sampling here of four of those new businesses provides an excellent insight into not only the types of businesses that decided to locate Downtown but also an idea of what the new businesses hope to accomplish in their new Downtown locations.
