June 3rd and July 1st! 5:30 to 9:00 pm
By Michelle Smythe and Kaitlin Steinberg
We invite you to come Downtown this summer to the First Friday ArtWalks, June 3rd and July 1st. ArtWalk continues to grow and this summer will be no exception. Come visit and check out the exceptional talent of our local artists and musicians and all the fun happenings Downtown!
ArtWalk has grown to 63 participating venues opening their doors for the event. Downtown businesses feature art, music, refreshments, specials and discounts. ArtWalk begins and ends in La Retama Park where visitors will find artists and food vendors, live music, Kid’s Art Corner, food and a festive atmosphere. La Retama Park is located at the triangle between Mesquite, Peoples and Schatzel Streets. Live music in June and July will be provided by “Get off the Lawn” Bluegrass Band.
Art Museum of South Texas, Asian Cultures Museum and Museum of Science and History will be participating in ArtWalk. To get there, just catch the ArtWalk Express, a bus graciously provided by The Regional Transit Authority that transports ArtWalkers to the far-reaching venues of ArtWalk, like the museums, Yachting Center, Art Center of Corpus Christi and Water Street Center where Tango Tea Room is located.
The DTown Tram continues to transport ArtWalkers to centrally located venues in the heart of Downtown with HOBO aboard to entertain the crowds playing their special blend of “Honkadelica”. Both transports (ArtWalk Express and the Tram) connect at La Retama Park every 30 minutes.
The Art Center of Corpus Christi opens three new exhibitions. The annual exhibition of works by the members of the South Texas Art League & Southwest Sculpture Society is always an exceptional show. “Striking a Balance” features functional ceramic tableware and unique hand-crafted ceramics by Bridget Hauser, the founder of Sunset Canyon Pottery. “Hidden Messages” is an exhibition of paintings by Phyllis Sayre.
They will also feature performances throughout the evening by Stefan and Diana Easter, professional ballroom dancers.
At WaterStreet Market the music will be provided in June by Two Peas in a Pod who will be opening for Collin Roache. During musical breaks there will be performances by dance group Celtic Flair. The WaterStreet restaurant group will, weather permitting, again have an outside bar and oysters for sale in the marketplace. Treehouse Art Collective will be featuring the work of ceramist Clarice Bookamer and don’t forget to visit with Eclectique, Julie’s Boutique, Betty’s Trash to Treasure, The Gold Bug and Surf Club Records / Texas Surf Museum and see all the fun things they have to offer.
At K Space Contemporary, Rachel Robinson is the June Art Star. Rachel’s fascinating pen and ink drawings will be on display in the gift shop gallery. “Latex Suites & Gardens” an exhibition of paintings by Cande Aguilar continues in the main gallery. A special knock-out presentation, will be models wearing the fantastic fashions created for Project Slicker, the annual condom couture show sponsored by Family Planning of the Coastal Bend. Winning designs from Project Slicker will be displayed at K Space Contemporary through June 24. And while you’re there, be sure to create your own Surreal work of art for “Exquisite Corpus,” K Space Contemporary’s exhibition opening July 3rd.
Enjoy great music all over Downtown. House of Rock is featuring the band Electric Touch and works of art by the Coastal Bend Artists. At the Yachting Center of Corpus Christi, enjoy Friday night music at Tavern on the Bay and take some time to shop for original items at Cathy's Boutique & Gift Shop. Executive Surf Club kicks off The Walk of Fame Rock Awards Show with Jason McMaster and Vallejo ($10 at door) on stage.
While traveling about Downtown, be sure to pick up raffle tickets at each ArtWalk shop and gallery location. Bring the tickets back to La Retama Park by 8:45 and put them in the raffle drum for a chance to win some great prizes. The drawing will be held at 9 pm. Prizes include gift certificates, door prizes, and the grand prize – an original work of art by David Phillips valued at $500. July will be your last chance to win a David Phillips painting. ArtWalkers must be present to win.
For ArtWalk maps and general info, look for the ArtWalk Ambassadors wearing bright orange shirts. Some are on Segways (thanks to SegCity), and some are stationed at key locations around Downtown. ArtWalk maps are also available on the ArtWalk Tram, at the DMD booth in La Retama Park, and at the Art Center, K Space and Water Street Center. Free parking is available and all venues are near favorite Corpus Christi eateries. Admission is FREE.

Coming in July, the Marina joins the festivities by hosting Marina Market Days on the first Saturday of each month. Vendors will set up in the grass area of the Lawrence Street T-Head. We hope to make Downtown Corpus Christi the place to be the first weekend of every month!
