Threads
By Megan Brieger
Originally from Portland, Jennifer Reid is a young, vibrant girl who has been residing in Austin for the past five years. After a few years of brainstorming on her idea for a funky, hip consignment shop, she’s transforming her dream into reality... and she’s bringing Threads to William street in Downtown Corpus Christi. Here’s what she wants future Threads’ lovers to know about herself and her newest contribution to this wonderful city. What made you want to open Threads and how long have you had this idea?
“Its been a dream of mine for about 3 years now, my mom owned a shop similar to Threads in Portland and between helping her out, being inspired by all the really cool shops in Austin, and being tired of ‘working for the man’ I decided to start saving and really honing in on making my dream of owning my own shop happen!”
What is your interest in fashion?
“Well I love seeing people express themselves through fashion. Just wearing something that makes them feel good, ya know. It's fun just mixing and matching things together to make something fresh and new! And It's even better when you find an awesome deal!”
How would you describe your style and how close or different is it to the style of the average Threads customer?
“Well I guess I’m not the “average gal”. I skateboard, so my style is a bit different from other people. I guess I just wear whatever makes me feel good. I can get down with the boys but I still love to throw on some heels and a sexy dress and go out for a great night on the town.”
Describe the kind of style of ‘the average Threads shopper’?
“To each their own. I want Threads to be very versatile and I want anyone to be able to find something great there!”
Why Downtown Corpus Christi?
“I love the openness that the ocean has to offer and I love Texas, so why not return to my roots? After being gone for five years, I see that Corpus has so much potential to have a awesome Downtown scene... and not just for one night. We have the geography that alone makes this city worth living in. Bringing the business and entertainment, etc. that right now, everyone leaves town to go do, is just going to make it that much better.”
Describe your vision of Threads?
“Threads will be a place where you can go and find something that all the stores in the mall don’t have in multiples. You could stumble upon something ‘one of a kind’. Every day there will be something new to find. We will have everything- from tennies to heels, rings to sunglasses, t-shirts to dressy tops, day dresses to formals. Threads will be a place where you go to search around and have a good time, and discover your new favorite outfit :)”
Describe the average Threads shopper?
“Anyone who likes a great deal on name-brand stuff!”
What sets Threads apart from thrift stores?
“I feel that it’s a step above, lets say, Goodwill in that we are only taking things that are in style, so you eliminate having to sift thru a lot of random items. And you get money for your clothes!”
What sets Threads apart from other consignment shops?
“The difference in Threads vs. other resale shops in town is that Threads will be targeting towards a younger generation. It’s more for people in their teens to 30's, and also we will have a separate guys department!”
Hours of operation?
“7 days a week 12 pm- 8 pm.”
When will you start opening to take clothes?
“We will start taking clothes June 6th! Times will be posted on Facebook each Monday for the week. Basically, everyone who brings in clothes has their own account and when their item(s) sell they get 40% cash or they can choose to use it as store credit and receive 50%. Every 15th of the month, a report for that month will be made where we’ll calculate how much you sold We’ll reach out to you, and then you can come pick up your money or store credit.”
Plans for grand opening/ArtWalk plans?
“Threads will open July 1st in collaboration with ArtWalk. I plan on having a ribbon cutting ceremony, bands playing, professional Hoola-hooping going on, jewelry and art for sale, etc. It’s gonna be a real fun day you won’t want to miss!”
What’s your goal for the shop?
“Aside from being everyone’s new favorite place to find great deals on great clothes, Threads will host a lot of really cool events in the future! Stay posted online facebook.com/txthreads or ccthreads.blogspot.com”
How will Threads help improve and better Corpus Christi?
“Hopefully I can inspire others to move or start a business Downtown. It's a nice getaway from the inner city shuffle, just to walk around Downtown and visit shops and restaurants. Take a bike ride down Ocean, stop by Cole Park, or walk the pier. It’s a great city and this whole “there’s nothing to do here” attitude and perspective that a lot of people have, it just isn’t true. By getting people to come Downtown, and inspiring others to help improve our city, I hope more people will learn to start fully enjoying our city. We’re here so we might as well make the best of it!”
Anything else you want your future Threads shoppers to know?
“You never know what you’re going to find, so come in and enjoy the experience of finding something unique and new. Well new to you anyways!
Also, If you choose to donate the items we cannot take they will be going to various women’s shelters and teenage housing shelters in town.”
