June 2011 - Big Bang

4th of July Big Bang Celebration
By Mayor's Office
Our country’s Independence Day will be celebrated on Monday, July 4th with some new activities and those tried-and-true traditions which have been with us for years.

We’ll kick it off with the “4 for the 4th” fun-run featuring the Corpus Christi Roadrunners.  Go to www.corpusroadrunners.com for start time & location.

Proudly join the Veterans Band and Mayor’s Committee on Veterans Affairs at a 10:00 a.m. ceremony at Sherrill Park recalling the history-making events and heroes which are celebrated on this day each year.

The Art Museum of South Texas (www.stia.org) will be open, celebrating “Dollar Days” with a $1.00 entry fee per person from 10 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Enjoy the nostalgic works of Norman Rockwell indoors, with kids activities, all-American food and music for the whole family on the lawn and barge dock.  View the fireworks close-up from Dobson’s Café at an exclusive reception benefiting the museum.  Call 825.3500 for details.

Due to the Cole Park improvements, the children’s area will be moved to the vicinity of Old City Hall Park, starting at 12 noon.   There will also be a concert stage featuring a variety of local bands and music. Across the boulevard Sea Wall Food & Spirits will be open for business serving food and beverages for purchase.

At 5:30 p.m., weather-permitting, the Coast Guard will perform a mock “helo demonstration” off the marina T-Heads with a fly-over of their Falcon jet.

Following that, the Stars & Stripes Parade (unselfishly organized by the Bucaraders each year) is going “retro;” looking for entries of yesteryear.  Kids on bicycles with flags & streamers flying, Military vehicles & personnel from all branches, colorful clowns, floats from local corporate and community organizations, kids clubs and trail riders, anyone and everyone who rejoices in the freedom and liberty that America provides is welcome to participate!

The parade has moved back to Shoreline Blvd starting at 6:00 p.m, beginning at Kinney Street and travelling North to Mann Street.

All throughout the day you’ll find anything and everything you’d want to eat, drink or purchase along the seawall; where street vendors are always welcome.

The USS Lexington has once again joined in the partnership as the launch pad for the H-E-B fireworks display starting at 9:30 p.m.

Join us in making our city shine!  Show everyone the great things Corpus Christi has to offer!

Right now www.cctexas.com under “Current Information” has the July 4th Vendor Application.  Coming soon will be the parade entry application and event details. Or contact Kelly Denson, Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff at 826.3100 or kellyd@cctexas.com.  Thank you.
