August 2011 - Corpus Christi First

Corpus Christi First
By: Megan Brieger and Alan S Albin

In July, our City residents and visitors experienced the launch of the “Corpus Christi First” initiative.  This progressive project is a collaboration between the City of Corpus Christi, the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Downtown Management District, the Downtown Marina, and the Regional Transportation Authority, in an effort to promote the revitalization of Downtown and to increase tourist traffic in Corpus Christi. It is an event-based program, scheduled to take place during the first weekend of every month. The anchor events for the weekend's activity are:

Friday - the Downtown ArtWalk,
Saturday - Marina Market Days,
Sunday - Harbor Bridge BridgeWalk.

These events encompass an incredible range of positivity, promoting community involvement and inclusion necessary for continued successful growth. As the initiative gains momentum it is anticipated that other events will be officially “adopted” to become part of “Corpus Christi First” and at the time of writing, in time for the August 5th ArtWalk, docent guided tours of City owned Public Art in the Downtown area will be piloted on ArtWalk mornings in August, September and October. The 9:30 tour will be dedicated to schools but the 11am tour will be open to the public and is free of charge. Starting point is La Retama park and transport is provided by the DMD Dtown tram. Also negotiations are underway to increase the Sunday fitness options to include a family friendly bicycle ride and some kind of running event.

ArtWalk, the veteran event of the DMD, takes place on the first Friday afternoon of every month from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. It  originally started as a small, five venue, art event and has evolved into the current 68 venue “Community Event” designed to demonstrate to residents and visitors alike that the Corpus Christi Downtown, whilst having much redevelopment still to come, is a safe and vibrant place to visit. Currently the Downtown businesses actively participating in the event offer music, art, and activities that give folks many reasons to revisit every month. The event grows each month, in venues and in participants. Since February, attendance has risen from the 300 mark to an estimated 2700 participants at the July ArtWalk. The Art Museum of South Texas, The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, and the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures (all of which offer free entry to ArtWalkers on ArtWalk night) have all recently joined the ever increasing list of venues. Two new businesses on William Street (Threads and Urban Fare Cafe)  held their Grand Openings during the July ArtWalk, and have also added themselves to the growing list of ArtWalk venues. Additionally, local artists set up booths in La Retama Park and all over Downtown artists and musicians can be found  sharing their creations with fellow community members and visitors to the  ArtWalk.

Marina Market Days continues the weekend’s events, and is held on the Lawrence Street T-head from 9am until 4pm Saturday. Like ArtWalk, the event is free to the public, and is located within walking distance of most Downtown hotels, making it highly accessible and noticeable to visitors. The Dtown Tram operates between Shoreline and the Lawrence Street T-head to provide a shuttle service for Market Days visitors who cannot get parked on the T-Head. The local community, boaters and visitors can enjoy another day of arts, crafts, and food at the new waterfront festival. An estimated 5,000 people attended the first Marina Market Days on July 3rd and August Market Days will have even more vendors than last time. At the time of writing over 66 vendors have registered and it looks like August will be a similar success. The September Marina Market Days will be held Saturday September 3rd.

Bridgewalk has been established as the Sunday anchor event, chosen to start a “fitness Sunday” theme, it is hoped to add cycling, running, and possibly other physical activity events to the day in order to provide a wide spectrum of activities from which to choose. After all walking over a high bridge may not appeal to everyone!
Walking the bridge, whilst it has undoubtedly been done before, started in earnest on January 1st 2010 when a small group of friends and family realized a longtime ambition to walk over the Corpus Christi Harbor Bridge. Only about a dozen people took part that day and the event was covered by Channel 3 and Channel 6. It turned into a monthly walking “club” which continued until April 2010 at which time the pedestrian walkways were closed to the public pending completion of the bridge maintenance contract.
TxDot agreed to open the walkways for limited special events and so we requested July 3rd to launch “Corpus Christi First” and January 1st, 2012 to help folks keep their New Year resolutions to stay fit. The July event, led by Mayor Joe Adame, attracted 200 walkers, 2 kids in strollers, and 4 dogs to complete the 2.5 mile walk. It was so successful that the Mayor suggested, to maintain momentum, we relocate the walk to Shoreline for the months of August to December, and February and March 2012 and so the “BridgeWalk without a bridge” was born.
Come join us at 9am  on September 4th, October 2nd, November 6th, and December 4th, weather permitting, to walk from the water park at Resaca, along Shoreline to Lawrence Street, around the T-Head and back. This is a 2.6 mile walk roughly equivalent to the distance covered on the bridge.

August 2011 - First Friday ArtWalk

First Friday ArtWalk
By Michelle Smythe

There’s a fantastic event happening right here in our own backyard and it’s breathing new life into Downtown Corpus Christi.  ArtWalk is not to be missed!  Held on the First Friday of every month with estimated attendance at 2700, ArtWalk continues to highlight the exceptional talent of our local artists and musicians.

ArtWalk has grown to include more than 65 venues opening their doors for the event.  Downtown businesses feature art, music, refreshments, specials and discounts.  The event begins and ends in La Retama Park where visitors will find artists and food vendors, live music, Kid’s Art Corner and an all around festive atmosphere.  La Retama Park is located at the triangle between Mesquite, Peoples and Schatzel Streets.  Live music in September will be provided by Get Off the Lawn bluegrass band.

Art Museum of South Texas, Asian Cultures Museum and Museum of Science and History are now participating in ArtWalk.  To get there, just catch the ArtWalk Express, a bus graciously provided by The Regional Transportation Authority that transports ArtWalkers to the far-reaching venues of ArtWalk, like the museums, Yachting Center, Art Center of Corpus Christi and Tango Tea Room.

The Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures is featuring a new mixed media artwork by local artist Antonio “Tony” Armadillo.  The work combines Japanese sentiments towards nature with Armadillo’s serene yet powerful interpretation of the most recent tragic occurrences in Japan.  Two master wood-block print artists, Katsushika Hokusai and Ando Hiroshige are reflected in Armadillo’s representation of the recent tragedy of March 11, 2011. The work is on display August 5 – September 2, 2011.

The Art Museum of South Texas has two wonderful exhibits on display.  Beyond Shared Language: Contemporary Art and the Latin American Experience includes works by 14 artists of Latin American-descent (from North, Central and South America). The exhibition explores issues relating to cultural identity, ethnicity, religion and both the fragility and fluidity of their visual language. Also on view is Dorothy Hood:  Exploring Scale.  Dorothy Hood, born and raised in Bryan, Texas, lived in Houston for much of her life.  This exhibition presents a look at Hood’s large-scale paintings that were influenced by the wide-open Texas skies and NASA’s space exploration program.   Entrance to the Art Museum of South Texas on ArtWalk night is free.

In Water St. Market, the Treehouse Art Collective LLC is celebrating their One Year Anniversary with featured art work by all six core members:  Sherry Bercaw, Pat Conway, Ellen Fehrenkamp, Gloria Hunter, Melinda Ramos and Kathy Wagner.  This is a beautiful shop with some truly original treasures.

The Art Center of Corpus Christi opens new exhibitions by John Williams, Maricela Sanchez and Cliff Welty, as well as works by the painting students of Lynn Dickey and
Vicki Marshall.

At K Space Contemporary, don’t’ miss the Shockingly Spectacular Super September Salon, a giant floor-to-ceiling art sale.  K Space is turning its walls over to artists from all over the region and letting them cram as much art into the space as possible.   There will be some excellent deals on artwork here!

Peace of Mind is hosting two special guests during the September ArtWalk.  Rebecca DeLeon will  offer unique jewelry, mystical oils, crystals and incense, and Rebecca Flores will provide Angel Card readings and Ask Your Guide card readings.   Peace of Mind will also be doing massage in La Retama Park.

While traveling about Downtown, be sure to pick up raffle tickets at each ArtWalk location. Bring the tickets back to La Retama Park by 8:45 and put them in the raffle drum for a chance to win some great prizes. The drawing will be held at 9 pm.  Prizes include gift certificates, door prizes, and the grand prize – an original work of art by a local artist.  ArtWalkers must be present to win.

The DTown Tram continues to transport ArtWalkers to centrally located venues in the heart of Downtown with HOBO aboard to entertain the crowds playing their special blend of “Honkadelica”.  Both the RTA ArtWalk Express and the DTown Tram connect at La Retama Park every 30 minutes.

For ArtWalk maps and general info, look for ArtWalk Ambassadors wearing bright orange shirts. Some are on Segways (thanks to SegCity), and some are stationed at key locations around Downtown.  ArtWalk maps are also available on the ArtWalk Tram, at the DMD booth in La Retama Park, the Art Center, K Space and Water Street Center. Free parking is available and all venues are near favorite Corpus Christi eateries.  Admission is FREE.

For continuing updates, check out the ArtWalk website www.artwalkcc.com and sign up for the email newsletter to receive our monthly flyer announcing new ArtWalk events!  You can also join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/artwalkcc.

ArtWalk is organized by the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District.  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, volunteer or a participant in the ArtWalk, or have any art related business, suggestions or ideas in regard to the ArtWalk, contact Alan Albin, Downtown Management District (alanalbin@dtowncc.com, 882-2363). August 2011 - House of Rock

Today in Rock History:
House of Rock Turns 6 Years Old!

On July 28th, 2011, House of Rock celebrated it’s sixth year in Downtown Corpus Christi. After six years of hosting countless musicians, artists, comedians, Burlesque girls, zombies, etc., the phrase “If these walls could talk” can’t be overused around there. Though the venue has had its share of both ups and downs, an equal mixture of contributing talents, by Casey Lain (managing partner of House of Rock) and by the community surrounding him, are the ultimate ingredients that have made celebrating 6 years possible. Everything from the interior design to the many events hosted at House of Rock depend on (and wouldn’t be possible without) a love for sharing talents and ideas with one another.

A few of September’s upcoming events include:
Friday, September 2nd and Saturday, September 3rd: The Art of Blue festival
Friday, September 9th: Periphery, The Human Abstract, Textures, The Contortionists, and Buried Under Texas.
Monday, September 12th: An evening with Hank 3.
Friday, Spetember 16th: Friends and Lovers Art Show.
Sunday, September 25th: The Aggrolites, and Peelander-Z.
Friday, September 30th: Leid Back Tour with Iration, Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds, and Through the Roots.
Weekly events include Acoustic Mondays, Open Mic Tuesdays, Beer Wednesdays, and Ballabajoomba Poetry Slams on Thursdays. For more information and for a detailed calendar of events, visit www.TexasHouseofRock.com

After a short House of Rock History lesson with Casey, we’ve got a few fun facts that you may or may not know about House of Rock.

Lets Talk House of Rock
House of Rock Then:
-Now a 3-room venue, House of Rock was originally just two rooms: The smaller, front bar, and a big room in the back (now the middle bar and the Venue).
-The front bar has stayed its original size, but its floor-plan has changed quite a bit. The original front bar had 2 pool tables in it, no video games, foosball table, or internet jukebox. The actual bar was located where our pool table now sits, and a hallway led to the bathrooms next to it.
-The rest of the building was one large room, painted completely black. The stage in what is now the middle bar used to have a pool table on it, and the sound booth was at the back of the room.
-Originally, the only form of artwork/decorations in the building were a few hand-painted designs of House of Rock initials on some of the walls, painted by one of the founding partners and his niece. These designs remain today and are the oldest art in the building.

House of Rock Now:
Almost 3 years ago, major renovations took place at House of Rock. A large garage door was installed, and the middle bar was created, allowing House of Rock to become a three-room venue.
- Light Fixtures throughout the building are made out of guitars and drums that were donated by customers in exchange for free concert tickets.
-House of Rock’s walls are now covered with art and pictures created by local artists.
-The first person to hang their art in House of Rock was a cab driver named Lee who used to regularly park his cab out front and come inside and draw. He donated some of his drawings to be hung up as decorations, and from then on the art never stopped coming in. Some of its been donated, some is on loan, and some sold to us. Every form of art in the building has a story behind it that relates to House of Rock.
-Fred Cook and his wife Melissa designed all of our 6 year Anniversary Posters except the first one. That one was designed by a Corpus Christi native named Jack Barfield who now lives in Austin.
-Fred Cook also designed the rooster (House of Rock’s logo).

August 2011 - Co-op Supply Shop

Co-op Supply Shop
By Limelight Productions
"Why downtown Corpus Christi?" That's what many people may have thought when
Derrick Frazier opened the doors of this men's retail store located on the corner of Peoples
Street and Mesquite. With a position in the family business rooting his feet in the CC sands,
Derrick and his wife Ryan decided that they wanted to contribute to the movement happening
amongst young entrepreneurs in the downtown area. So, he decided to live out his
passion starting right here, right now.
When it comes to Co-Op Supply, Derrick's objective is to create a specialty retail store that
offers a highly-differentiated collection of apparel, accessories and home goods. He hopes
for Co-Op's "supply" to become the keystone products worn and endorsed by men, not
only of the Coastal Bend, but across the nation as well. And, with a sleek website, an
online shopping store and the implementation of the Co-Op Box (an exclusive membership
that gets you hand-selected outfits shipped to your door), that won’t be too difficult of a
feat. However, ultimately, Co-Op is to become something more...a lifestyle movement for
the common man, known by the savvy and sophisticated but at home and comfortable for
those who maybe are not. You may see or hear the phrase "a more meaningful tomorrow"
around Co-Op's neck of the woods, and that's what this is about for Derrick...outfitting
each man with the supplies that will help him discover his place, in his culture, tomorrow
and every day that follows.
So, what does “Co-Op” even mean and what does it have to do with clothes? The name is
a conversation piece in and of itself. In the early phases of the store’s development, Derrick
decided that he wanted to absorb the creativity and influence of other key mentors.
Although the store carries his unique outlook on fashion, style and culture, this was going
to become a “cooperative” effort for direction and innovation. Fusing this idea with the
ultimate goal of supplying every man with his most basic needs, Derrick landed on “Co-Op
Supply.”
When he's not working at his 8-5, Derrick can be found in the store running the day-to-day
operations. Because after all, sharing this venture with each an every customer is as important
as the venture itself. So, next time you're downtown dining, touring or entertaining,
drop by and experience Co-Op Supply anytime Tuesday through Saturday, 12-7pm.

June 2011 - Harbor Ferry

Harbor Ferry offers improved accessibility
By Karina Paris

It has been a successful year, thus far, for the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and their enhanced Harbor Ferry service. The new 90-foot, double-decker M/V Independence has had the privilege of successfully providing Coastal Bend residents and visitors alike, with improved waterborne transportation service between the Peoples Street T-Head and Corpus Christi Beach. The 2011 service began March 11th and ran through the end of the Texas Spring Break week, March 20th. Ridership numbers have far surpassed the RTA’s goals this early in the season by reaching over 9,200 trips; nearing the ridership for the entire 2008 season.

The improved Harbor Ferry service is being operated by a world class company, HMS Global Maritime, which operates ferry services in Okinawa, Japan, Trinidad, and New York City, among others. Before the Harbor Ferry ribbon cutting, Mayor Joe Adame said, “This waterfront sets us apart from the rest of the world, and this new vessel can connect our region.”
“A new vessel, new contractor and an expanded schedule, has proved to be the right combination to launch a successful Harbor Ferry season”, said RTA Board Chairman, Crystal Lyons. “We appreciate the many community stakeholders who worked with the Corpus Christi RTA staff to help plan the service this year.”
The Harbor Ferry was first initiated in 1993 and operated by Danny Duzich of Barney's Place.  Duzich operated a retired Texas Dept of Transportation Ferry to provide the service. After 12 years of providing this service with a retired and converted vehicle ferry, in 2005, the RTA elected to upgrade service to improve accessibility and customer amenities. Since then, the RTA has continued its progression of improved waterborne transportation service into what we know as the Harbor Ferry today.

The success has not come easy; “The RTA is very excited to see the impressive response to our re-introduction of Harbor Ferry Service this year” said Scott Neeley, RTA CEO. “Our Board and staff have worked hard to bring a professional operator, HMS Maritime under contract to provide the citizens with a product they can be proud of and obviously we are seeing the results of that very good decision.”

Photos by Alan S Albin
Bicycles & Segways welcome.
The Harbor Ferry will begin service six days a week starting Memorial Day, May 30, 2011; summer service will run every week, Wednesday – Monday, from 10am to 6pm, until Labor Day weekend. The cost for the Harbor Ferry is $3.00 roundtrip or $1.50 for a reduced fare pass. For more information on the Harbor Ferry, please visit www.ccrta.org or call 361-883-2287.

June 2011 - The Ritz Theatre.

1930 - Inside Procenium
Revitalizing the Ritz Theatre.
By Monica Sawyer
The Ritz Theatre is coming back to life! Finally! If you don’t know about The Ritz, then you are in for a treat. This amazing theatre was built in 1929 and was once the finest in the state, host to films, vaudeville, USO shows, tons of music and drama, and most recently, ghost hunts! Closed in 1989, the Ritz sat crumbling until Monica McLeod Sawyer discovered the old girl sitting there, empty and sad, waiting to be revived.

“I was doing some soul-searching Downtown, trying to figure out what my purpose was in Corpus Christi,” Monica recalls. “I was actually considering moving away, but knew there was something bigger in my future… The side door, normally barred shut, was mysteriously open. I couldn’t resist the temptation to explore. What I found blew me away and almost brought me to tears! Here sat a gorgeous historic theatre, ceiling painted like the sky, walls like the sides of buildings, red velvet seats, urns inset in arched windows, made to look like you were sitting in a Spanish courtyard. I couldn’t believe that something this amazing still existed in Corpus Christi without anyone really knowing about it. I guess it had been closed so long (at that point almost 20 years), it had just faded from memory.”

In 2006, Monica Sawyer formed Corpus Christi PATCH (Positive Action Towards Cultural Heritage) to restore The Ritz and to develop, foster and promote the arts as valuable experiences, central to the lives of the community. For the last 5 years, the CCPATCH board and volunteers have worked to clean up the theatre and gain title to the building. This past Christmas, wishes were granted as the non-profit received a long-awaited gift of ownership of The Ritz Theatre from Mr. Robert Rowling (TRT Holdings and Omni Hotels). The donation was considered a huge accomplishment and a major milestone, especially since so many people were convinced it would never happen. Good thing Monica and the board didn’t listen to those nay-sayers! Now the real work has begun as CCPATCH rallies to raise millions of dollars to complete a full-scale historic restoration of the 82-year-old landmark. But is it worth it? Experts say yes, without a doubt. Time and time again, restored theatres have proven to increase economic development and serve as major catalysts for Downtown redevelopment across the country, and healthy Downtowns have a direct impact on surges in job growth.

This summer launches the “Revival” initiative for The Ritz. CCPATCH’s three-phase plan consists of “Revival”, raising the money for “Restoration”, the full-scale rehabilitation of the structure, and “Raising the Curtain” the last phase of fundraising and program planning before the grand opening. The group hopes to complete the project within 5 years, but that really depends on fundraising. CCPATCH will utilize many avenues of funding such as private donations and event revenue, historic tax credits, grants and public funding sources.
This summer, fans of The Ritz will get a chance to support the project in important ways. CCPATCH has planned three exciting events to jumpstart the Revival phase. A cleanup, documentary film kickoff and a huge fundraiser entertainment event are now on the calendar.

Clean Up The Ritz – Saturday June 11th, 9am to noon, 715 N. Chaparral Street
The first event is one in need of volunteers willing to get their hands dirty! Anyone who wants to help is welcome. Volunteers will be ripping out the last of the old carpet, cleaning the building, retouching the mural and fixing up the lobby. The Junior League has sponsored the last two big cleanups, filling 4 giant dumpsters of trash. Old seats, costumes, sets, marquee letters, as well as programs, scripts and old photos have been salvaged from the building. CCPATCH will one day display some of the old relics. Brian Devaney of EMD Services is sponsoring the event, keeping the air clean while volunteers work. Jennifer and Larry Williams are opening up Dr. Rockits next door to provide the volunteers with refreshments, bathrooms and a break from the heat.

Remember The Ritz – Friday, July 1st, 5:30-8:30 p.m., at The Ritz (715 N. Chaparral St.), in conjunction with DTown’s First Friday ArtWalk
The entire community is being called to tell their personal stories about The Ritz. CCPATCH is starting a documentary film and would like anyone who has attended an event or worked in The Ritz to come tell their story at the “Remember The Ritz” event sponsored by the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. The group would also like to hear from supporters about why they want to see The Ritz restored. Image Cinema is donating two of their Photo Booths (turned into video booths) for the event. Derrick Perrin from Big Box Pro and Danney Boren from D&P Photography and Videography will also be on hand to film and follow guests around as they reminisce about the theatre and explore the old building. Refreshments will be provided by the Corpus Christi Chamber. Come be a part of this historic event.

Dine with The Ritz and Famous – a huge night of entertainment – Thursday, July 14th, 6:30 p.m., Solomon Ortiz Center
The first major fundraiser for The Ritz is “Dine with The Ritz and Famous”, a dinner and show featuring 8 professional impersonation acts: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Billy Holiday, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Diana Ross, Reba McEntire and CHER! Aaron Davis will be Emcee and the evening is sponsored by Josh Salinas and Company as well as The Ortiz Center, La De Da Events and Dr Rockstar. There will be a silent auction, Image Cinema Photo Booths, and CCPATCH promises the evening will be a night guests will never forget. Table sponsorships are available and tickets can be purchased online at www.ccritz.com/events.html. Come support The Ritz (and write a big check for the cause) on this fun-filled night.

CCPATCH has a tough road ahead, but one that is worth the tenacity and effort. Once restored, The Ritz will be a very visible sign of growth and activity for Downtown and inspire more businesses and activities to thrive there. Support The Ritz today. Visit www.ccritz.com for more info or call Monica Sawyer at 361-887-6055.

We invite you to come Downtown this summer to the First Friday ArtWalks, June 3rd and July 1st. ArtWalk continues to grow and this summer will be no exception.  Come visit and check out the exceptional talent of our local artists and musicians and all the fun happenings Downtown!

ArtWalk has grown to 63 participating venues opening their doors for the event.  Downtown businesses feature art, music, refreshments, specials and discounts.  ArtWalk begins and ends in La Retama Park where visitors will find artists and food vendors, live music, Kid’s Art Corner, food and a festive atmosphere.  La Retama Park is located at the triangle between Mesquite, Peoples and Schatzel Streets.  Live music in June and July  will be provided by “Get off the Lawn” Bluegrass Band.

Art Museum of South Texas, Asian Cultures Museum and Museum of Science and History will be participating in ArtWalk.  To get there, just catch the ArtWalk Express, a bus graciously provided by The Regional Transit Authority that transports ArtWalkers to the far-reaching venues of ArtWalk, like the museums, Yachting Center, Art Center of Corpus Christi and Water Street Center where Tango Tea Room is located.

The DTown Tram continues to transport ArtWalkers to centrally located venues in the heart of Downtown with HOBO aboard to entertain the crowds playing their special blend of “Honkadelica”.  Both transports (ArtWalk Express and the Tram) connect at La Retama Park every 30 minutes.

The Art Center of Corpus Christi opens three new exhibitions. The annual exhibition of works by the members of the South Texas Art League & Southwest Sculpture Society is always an exceptional show.  “Striking a Balance” features functional ceramic tableware and unique hand-crafted ceramics by Bridget Hauser, the founder of Sunset Canyon Pottery.  “Hidden Messages” is an exhibition of paintings by Phyllis Sayre.
They will also feature performances throughout the evening by Stefan and Diana Easter, professional ballroom dancers.

At WaterStreet Market the music will be provided in June by Two Peas in a Pod who will be opening for Collin Roache. During musical breaks there will be performances by dance group Celtic Flair. The WaterStreet restaurant group will, weather permitting, again have an outside bar and oysters for sale in the marketplace.  Treehouse Art Collective will be featuring the work of ceramist Clarice Bookamer and don’t forget to visit with Eclectique, Julie’s Boutique, Betty’s Trash to Treasure, The Gold Bug and Surf Club Records / Texas Surf Museum and see all the fun things they have to offer.

At K Space Contemporary, Rachel Robinson is the June Art Star.  Rachel’s fascinating pen and ink drawings will be on display in the gift shop gallery.  “Latex Suites & Gardens” an exhibition of paintings by Cande Aguilar continues in the main gallery.   A special knock-out presentation, will be models wearing the fantastic fashions created for Project Slicker, the annual condom couture show sponsored by Family Planning of the Coastal Bend.  Winning designs from Project Slicker will be displayed at K Space Contemporary through June 24.  And while you’re there, be sure to create your own Surreal work of art for “Exquisite Corpus,” K Space Contemporary’s exhibition opening July 3rd.

Enjoy great music all over Downtown.  House of Rock is featuring the band Electric Touch and works of art by the Coastal Bend Artists.  At the Yachting Center of Corpus Christi, enjoy Friday night music at Tavern on the Bay and take some time to shop for original items at Cathy's Boutique & Gift Shop.  Executive Surf Club kicks off The Walk of Fame Rock Awards Show with Jason McMaster and Vallejo ($10 at door) on stage.

While traveling about Downtown, be sure to pick up raffle tickets at each ArtWalk shop and gallery location. Bring the tickets back to La Retama Park by 8:45 and put them in the raffle drum for a chance to win some great prizes. June 2011 - New Business - Dos Comales

Dos Comales Cafe y Cantina
By Lindsey Abel Pietsch

The newest edition to Downtown Corpus Christi is Dos Comales Cafe y Cantina, located on the corner of Water Street and William. Dos Comales Café y Cantina is a unique restaurant and bar that offers seafood specialties and traditional Tex-Mex fare, in a contemporary inspired space with Mexican flair.  “Dos,” the anointed nickname for the restaurant, brings a new lunch, happy hour, and dinner option to the many people who work, live, and play Downtown.  With an extensive menu and a full bar that offers specialty margaritas, Dos Comales has something for everyone.  This Mexican food eatery is a different and affordable restaurant/bar addition to the established arts and entertainment district in Downtown Corpus Christi.

“Dos” is like no other Mexican food restaurant in town.  What used to be an old tire store has been transformed into a warm and sunny venue with vibrant-colored walls and lush tropical plants.  Missing are the typical sombreros and piñatas; instead, diners will see a warm gold wall upstairs dotted with colorful bowls, a blue and yellow-tiled bar, colorful festoon lights covering the ceiling, and a beautiful turquoise arched wall that divides the main dining area from the bar.  And hey—there are even four TV’s to satisfy the sports fans in your group.  Windows all along one wall contribute to the festive atmosphere and provide a beautiful view of Downtown.  The overall contemporary design aesthetic leaves plenty of room for some traditional touches as well.  Red leather chairs adorned with brass nail heads and crisp white tablecloths help to create a comfortable mix of old and new.   A beautiful painting of a young mother in rural Mexico with a baby on her back greets customers at the front door.  This, and other paintings of everyday life in Mexico by the talented Arnold Gonzalez, brings an authentic feel to Dos Comales.

The menu features an impressive assortment of appetizers, soups, fresh seafood dishes, fajitas, traditional plates, and homemade desserts.  While looking over the extensive menu, customers are invited to munch on warm, crispy chips and two different salsas—a subtly spicy red sauce and a creamy salsa verde with a “kick”.   Appetizers include everything from traditional homemade guacamole to “Queso de la Costa”-- Monterrey jack cheese layered with crab, shrimp, and crawfish tails sautéed in a mild ranchero sauce. House favorites include Fajitas Don Juanito--fajitas smothered in a creamy cilantro sauce with mushrooms, red bell peppers, and purple onions; seafood enchiladas stuffed with shrimp, crab and crawfish; fresh flounder; stuffed-fried avocados; and fish tacos.  Soft, warm flour tortillas are made fresh everyday in the Dos Comales kitchen, and be sure to try the fine, silky flan for dessert—the perfect ending to a great meal.

If you’re in a festive mood, Dos Comales also offers a drink menu that won’t disappoint.  Let the bartender serve up a freshly-squeezed lime margarita.  Customer favorites include La Flaca Margarita, Dos’s version of a low-cal margarita that is made with tequila, agave nectar, and fresh lime juice.  Another popular version of the margarita is Mi Corazon which features a special liquor floater.  The most famous—or maybe infamous of all-- is the Dosarita, a gigantic goblet of the frozen house margarita with a Dos Equis bottle floater.  It is a definite crowd pleaser and packs a big punch!  In addition to specialty margaritas, Dos Comales has a great wine list, an array of domestic and imported beer, and a full bar.  So—if you’re not a tequila drinker, the bartenders at Dos Comales will be happy to serve up a cocktail to suit your taste.

The patio at “Dos” is a festive outdoor area with plenty of seating, a bar, and outdoor music.  Festoon lights hang overhead and help to create a casual, fun atmosphere.  The bubbling water features and lovely terra cotta planters filled with tropical plants add to the ambience as well.  So, meet your friends on the patio!  There’s no better place to sip a refreshing margarita or cold beer at the end of a long workday or on a laid back weekend afternoon.  The patio at Dos Comales is perfect for al fresco dining on our beautiful Corpus Christi bay front.

Whether you’re with family and friends, co-workers, or even out–of- town guests, Dos Comales is the place to go.  This new and exciting addition to Downtown dining in Corpus Christi offers tasteful décor, spicy food, warm friendly service, and plenty of cold beer and fresh margaritas to cool you down!

June 2011 - New Business - Threads

Threads
By Megan Brieger
Originally from Portland, Jennifer Reid is a young, vibrant girl who has been residing in Austin for the past five years. After a few years of brainstorming on her idea for a funky, hip consignment shop, she’s transforming her dream into reality... and she’s bringing Threads to William street in Downtown Corpus Christi. Here’s what she wants future Threads’ lovers to know about herself and her newest contribution to this wonderful city.

What made you want to open Threads and how long have you had this idea?
“Its been a dream of mine for about 3 years now, my mom owned a shop similar to Threads in Portland and between helping her out, being inspired by all the really cool shops in Austin, and being tired of ‘working for the man’ I decided to start saving and really honing in on making my dream of owning my own shop happen!”

What is your interest in fashion?
“Well I love seeing people express themselves through fashion. Just wearing something that makes them feel good, ya know. It's fun just mixing and matching things together to make something fresh and new! And It's even better when you find an awesome deal!”

How would you describe your style and how close or different is it to the style of the average Threads customer?
“Well I guess I’m not the “average gal”. I skateboard, so my style is a bit different from other people. I guess I just wear whatever makes me feel good. I can get down with the boys but I still love to throw on some heels and a sexy dress and go out for a great night on the town.”

Describe the kind of style of ‘the average Threads shopper’?
“To each their own. I want Threads to be very versatile and I want anyone to be able to find something great there!”

Why Downtown Corpus Christi?
“I love the openness that the ocean has to offer and I love Texas, so why not return to my roots?  After being gone for five years, I see that Corpus has so much potential to have a awesome Downtown scene... and not just for one night. We have the geography that alone makes this city worth living in. Bringing the business and entertainment, etc. that right now, everyone leaves town to go do, is just going to make it that much better.”

Describe your vision of Threads?
“Threads will be a place where you can go and find something that all the stores in the mall don’t have in multiples. You could stumble upon something ‘one of a kind’. Every day there will be something new to find. We will have everything- from tennies to heels, rings to sunglasses, t-shirts to dressy tops, day dresses to formals. Threads will be a place where you go to search around and have a good time, and discover your new favorite outfit :)”

Describe the average Threads shopper?
“Anyone who likes a great deal on name-brand stuff!”

What sets Threads apart from thrift stores?
“I feel that it’s a step above, lets say, Goodwill in that we are only taking things that are in style, so you eliminate having to sift thru a lot of random items. And you get money for your clothes!”

What sets Threads apart from other consignment shops?
“The difference in Threads vs. other resale shops in town is that Threads will be targeting towards a younger generation. It’s more for people in their teens to 30's, and also we will have a separate guys department!”

Hours of operation?
    “7 days a week 12 pm- 8 pm.”

When will you start opening to take clothes?
“We will start taking clothes June 6th! Times will be posted on Facebook each Monday for the week. Basically, everyone who brings in clothes has their own account and when their item(s) sell they get 40% cash or they can choose to use it as store credit and receive 50%. Every 15th of the month, a report for that month will be made where we’ll calculate how much you sold We’ll reach out to you, and then you can come pick up your money or store credit.”

Plans for grand opening/ArtWalk plans?
“Threads will open July 1st in collaboration with ArtWalk. I plan on having a ribbon cutting ceremony, bands playing, professional Hoola-hooping going on, jewelry and art for sale, etc. It’s gonna be a real fun day you won’t want to miss!”

What’s your goal for the shop?
“Aside from being everyone’s new favorite place to find great deals on great clothes, Threads will host a lot of really cool events in the future! Stay posted online facebook.com/txthreads or ccthreads.blogspot.com”

How will Threads help improve and better Corpus Christi?
“Hopefully I can inspire others to move or start a business Downtown. It's a nice getaway from the inner city shuffle, just to walk around Downtown and visit shops and restaurants. Take a bike ride down Ocean, stop by Cole Park, or walk the pier. It’s a great city and this whole “there’s nothing to do here” attitude and perspective that a lot of people have, it just isn’t true. By getting people to come Downtown, and inspiring others to help improve our city, I hope more people will learn to start fully enjoying our city. We’re here so we might as well make the best of it!”

Anything else you want your future Threads shoppers to know?
“You never know what you’re going to find, so come in and enjoy the experience of finding something unique and new. Well new to you anyways!

Also, If you choose to donate the items we cannot take they will be going to various women’s shelters and teenage housing shelters in town.”

April 2011 - Texas International Boatshow

Experience the difference of an Outdoor Boat Show!
By Marion Daly

The Texas International Boat Show, presented by American Bank, returns to the Corpus Christi Marina for the fifth year, from April 7th-10th, slightly earlier than it’s usual dates.
With a decided effort in making the event even more appealing to families, the organizers have
extended the Texas Extreme Watersports section of the show, with powerboat racing, which this year features the North American Tri-Hull Powerboat Championship, the Corpus Christi Pro Wakeboard Tournament and the “Battle of the Badges”.
Even with a smaller in-water presence, the show offers a great display of boats including bay boats, lake boats, offshore and power alongside a variety of products and services ranging from jewelry to fishing rods!
There has never been a better time to buy a boat for those considering doing so, and with competitive pricing, and incentives like never before, it is now easier than ever to upgrade or get into boating.
For this purpose the show will feature a selection of exhibits showing how affordable some of these boats have become - with everything featured costing under $250 per month and some considerably less!  Finance and insurance companies will also be available to assist with information on purchase and coverage.

Another featured area this year will be for the local Services to exhibit and promote their particular
expertise, including the US Coast Guard, CC Police Department, CC Fire Department, Naval Air Station and Homeland Security, some of whom will also have individuals on hand to discuss employment opportunities in these various services.

Powerboating takes center stage, thrilling spectators with the North American Tri-Hull Powerboat Championship, hosted by the Southern Professional Outboard Racing Tour and this
event will be the first stop on the 2011 S.P.O.R.T. Racing Series.

A major event win for Corpus Christi over two other competing Cities to host this premier event in Tri-Hull racing, this year’s event will feature drivers from all over the USA, including the 2010 Tri-Hull Series Champion, Michael Schubert. Schubert is a 3 time series champion with more victories than any other driver in Tri-Hull history.  One of the toughest drivers on the circuit is 2 time series champion Dustin Terry from Houma, Louisiana.  Terry, along with his younger sister Whitney, and older brother Blake, make up the extremely competitive Team Terry.  Other competitors such as the 2010 Corpus Christi champ Cory Walker, and the always thrilling 63 year old “Scary” Jerry Rinker, will make this year’s event as crazy as any.

A great new fun event for this year will be the “Battle of the Badges”, featuring an inter-services on the water competition - this is the Corpus Christi Police Dept., Fire Dept., Homeland Security
and US Coast Guard as you’ve never seen them before!
Corpus Christi’s finest will face off for inner-tube racing, stand up paddle boarding and an in-water tug-of-war, all of which will keep adrenalin pumping until the last contestant crosses the finish line.
Spectators are encouraged to come and cheer their team to victory and see which of the services
will prevail, and who will take home this year’s bragging rights as Champions of Battle of the Badges!

The Corpus Christi Pro Wakeboard Tournament returns to the Boat Show for the third year,
one of the most unique wakeboard tournaments of the season created by Texas Ski Ranch,
out of Austin, and the Texas International Boat Show.
Because of the location of this tournament, inside the marina, riders are pulled by a personal watercraft, supplied by Gulf Coast Marine, instead of a full size wakeboard boat. Ramps are brought in to give the riders the ability to launch themselves high into the air performing up to 900 degree spins and flips.  While the riders and driver must deal with the tight show course, the crowd is treated to action that is so close to the crowd you can feel a slight mist as the riders go by.  This setting makes this tournament one of the most exciting events of the year! Tom Fooshee, the current WWA World Champion, returns to defend his title against a line up of world class riders. This is one event not to be missed.

The Organizers of the Texas International Boat Show are committed to staging events like this in Corpus Christi and to assist in promoting the health and fitness initiative that Mayor Joe Adame has put in place for the City - events where youngsters can be inspired into a more active lifestyle.

The Corpus Christi Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Water Street Restaurant Group
are among the sponsors of these exciting watersport events.

L&F Distributors, the REDC (Regional Economic Development Corp), National Oilwell Varco, Stewart & Stevenson and the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District again return as sponsors of the Boat Show.  All of the boat show sponsors offer incredible support for the show and the promotion of Corpus Christi across Texas, and the USA, as a destination and recreational boating venue.
This year live bands will perform on stage across the four days of the show, courtesy of the
Texas Jazz Festival, the line up is confirmed as:

Thursday, 7th       4.00pm - 6.00pm     Bobby Hesch
Friday, 8th           2.30pm - 5.00pm     Michael Guerra

Other live performers across the four days of the boat show will include Dean Adamson, a Texas singer/songwriter, guitarist, playing a variety of his own originals with old and new country and rock, as well as Miami based Doug Walker bringing the sounds of the Caribbean with his steel drums.

Also featured at the show will be 4 Wheel Specialties Racing - winners of the 2010 SCORE Tecate Baja 500, one of the biggest off road races in the world, a 500 mile loop that starts and ends in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, heading into the mountains of Baja, Mexico, and continuing through some of the roughest most arid desert in North America ending along the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

On display will be the race truck (owned by Pete "Pistol" Sohren) that won the Baja 500 as well as the race truck (owned by Wes Bevly III) that was built at 4 Wheel Specialties and has already won one race this year and finished 3rd in another.

April 2011 - Melges 24 World Championship

2011 Melges 24 World Championship
By Teri Ficken

In 1992, Buddy Melges won the America’s Cup with America3 in San Diego, California.  Success for Melges was at an all time high.  The America’s Cup Challenge donned a high-tech look and a high performance attitude.  In a boat designed by Reichel Pugh, Buddy Melges captured the America’s Cup title alongside Bill Koch.  Their campaign symbolized the last successful defense of the Cup by an American team. That same December, the Melges 24, also designed by Reichel Pugh, was tested in the snow on Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

In 1993, the Melges 24 was officially introduced to the sailboat market.  With its development and introduction, it set the standard in the high performance, sportboat category.  In just four years, the Melges 24 championed the keelboat market by holding its very first World Championship in Torquay, England and five years later in La Rochelle, France expanded to the largest World Championship with an overwhelming attendance of 127.

And now this spectacular event is coming to Corpus Christi as the Corpus Christi Yacht Club hosts the 2011 Melges 24 Worlds.  While we would love to say we are expecting 100 boats, realistically, in this economy, we are planning on around 50 boats, which still means as many as 250 sailors from all over the world will converge on Corpus Christi Bay to take part in this event. (This does not include Regatta Officials, Support Personnel, and National & International press.)  While the Yacht Club has resources to dedicate, one entity cannot do it all.  So, we’ve reached out to the Community for help and the response has been terrific.
An Economic Impact Study was done by Texas A&M Corpus Christi which showed that the 2002 Opti Worlds and the 2002 J/22 Worlds brought over 4.2 million dollars into Corpus Christi.  It is estimated that the 2006 J/80 Worlds brought in about the same amount for just the one event.  We feel that the 2011 Melges 24 Worlds will bring in far more, and we want the focus to be downtown.

We are not new to running Championship events.  In 2002, we hosted the Opti Worlds and the J/22 Worlds, and in 2006 we hosted the J/80 Worlds for which we won the prestigious St. Petersburg Yacht Club Trophy awarded by US Sailing for excellence in Race Management.  The majority of folks that ran that event are back to run this one as well.
The OMNI Marina is the “official” hotel of the Regatta, so we are working to partner with downtown businesses to provide incentives to keep these folks from wandering south.  We’ve been telling the participants that anything they need or want can be had with in walking distance downtown.
We are really happy to be working with the Downtown Management District and its members to help make this an exciting and successful event.  Some members such as the Yachting Center at Harrison’s Landing and Water Street Seafood Restaurants are already on board, as well as some other non-member Downtown businesses.  The racers will know who’s involved in providing discounts or freebies of some sort by a flyer to be displayed at the entrance to the business.  These folks are coming from all over the US, as well as Europe and some from as far away as Australia.  You can see a list of entrants by going to the regatta web site, www.melgesworlds.com . When they get here, they’ll be ready to race hard and party harder.
There is a Facebook page created by the US Melges 24 Class Association called “the Road to Corpus”.  It’s promoting 4 events, Key West Race Week which was in January, Miami Mid-Winter’s which was in February, the Bacardi Cup in Miami in March and Charleston Race Week in April all leading up to the Worlds here in May.  So, you can see there is a lot of effort being made to bring as many boats as possible to this event. Boats may start arriving as early as April after the conclusion of Charleston Race Week.  Storage on the L-Head is available as is offsite storage being offered by Vince Denais, Rugged Cycles.
The majority of boats and participants will begin to arrive the weekend of May 8th.  Corpus Christi Marina, a partner in this venture, is closing the Boat Ramp on the L-head from May 9 – 15 so we can have a staging and launching area.  The Nueces County Boat Ramp off the Nueces Bay Causeway will be open for public use as always.  The Regatta officially begins on Wednesday, May 11th, when we start registering and weighing boats.  The weekend of May 14th is a Pre-Worlds Regatta, which is more of a practice venue for all concerned, racers and race committee alike.  Then the fun really begins on Monday, May 16th when the Worlds racing begins. The first signal is at 11am daily and there are two races per day.  Racing concludes on Saturday, May 21st with an Awards Ceremony being held at the OMNI Marina.  So as you can see, there will be plenty of opportunities for the participants to make use of the bars, restaurants, and shops downtown, as well as for downtown folk to view some awesome racing.
While you can’t really see the start from Shoreline, you will be able to see the spinnakers on the down wind leg of the course, and what a sight that is to behold.  If you’re really lucky and have access to one of the office buildings downtown or on the bluff, you’ll certainly get an eyeful.  Let’s all pray for sunshine and wind for this event.
Should you want to go out on the water to view the start of a race, contact Monte at the Yachting Center at Harrison’s Landing.  They will be providing a spectator boat for on the water viewing at a reduced rate, but you’ll probably need to reserve a spot so be sure to call first.
While sailing events may not be as visual as say power boat races, kiteboarding or windsurfing, the benefits can be greater.  Regattas usually last anywhere from 5 – 10 days while these other 3 – 4 days and all the participants need to eat, sleep and be entertained for the entire period.  All events that bring revenue into our City are important.  A lot of time is spent marketing our beaches, fishing, etc., now is our opportunity to show the world once again what a world class sailing venue this is and how hospitable and welcoming our business community can be.  Working together with all of our sponsors, we can make the 2011 Melges 24 Worlds an event to be remembered and talked about for a long time.
